Do you have the curtains open? Heat will escape, Draught excluders close all doors just simple things muffinman. We are on prepayment meter and now use a little oil filled Rad to heat the living room and 2 bedrooms that are used on timer and overide on days like today when it is chilly. Boys have just got out of bath and have Thermals on as Pyjamas, Fleeces, socks and slippers and are toasty warm - Hope the weather gets better soonDFW Nerd #awaiting number - Proud to be dealing with my debts!

Muffin man: I'd turn the radiators right down, even off, in every room except the one you're all in. Running the boiler for only the rad/s in one room won't eat up as much gas as you'd think. I'd try and keep the thermostat at 16 or 17 degrees, put on jumpers and warm socks and see how you get on. Take a meter-reading before turning the heating on for an hour and then re-read it again.
It's a bit nippy in here at 11 degrees but I've got my brand-new fleece slippers on and my feet are very toasty. Now that one fleece top isn't warm enough I'm wearing two. I'm determined to hold off putting the heating on for as long as possible. Looking forward to hopping into bed with my electric blanket cranked up to "roasting" in a bit.0 -

Thanks lolly curtains are closed in lr can't close door to lr as no point one has 3 panels smashed and other has 2 panels smashed (but thats another issue ) i have put thermal curtains up at each doorway on an old broom handle with 2 cuphooks and it sounds crazy but it does make a difference
we used to have 2 oil radiators i lent one out and when the other one stopped working i got a convector heater as it was a bit cheaper at the time it's better than nothing i've put it in youngests room its a big room 16ftx9ft i need to get the curtains back up shes 15 and just redecorated her room with some wallpaper shed been given looks warmer already as its red might see if i can get the oil one back
it was so much easier before she hit her teens she'd wrap up so warm before going out etc and she'd get me to wrap her up in her bed like a sausage in pastry said it made her cosy2nd purse challenge no040£0 Sealed pot challenge ???? £2 trolley find not counting small coins till end year0 -
Muffin man can. You staple or tape something over the doors too....buble wrap, hard board, even bin bags might be better than nothing.
I am not very well this morning so having done morning rounds i have decided to spend some time in bed. Its v. Warm in bed and i don 't want to mess with the woodburner. I hope to be better to go out this afternoon.0 -
I agree with LIR Id Try and cover the holes over with something bubble wrap would be good or even another curtain if you have one - It's 0 here again today and i dont think it's going to get much warmer unfortunatley! Heatings still off but children at school and nursery, will have to go on when they come home - i dont mind dealing with the chill but its not fair on them!DFW Nerd #awaiting number - Proud to be dealing with my debts!

Muffinman when you heat your hot water bottles wrap any clothes you want to wear around them and place under covers of bed. This airs them
Hubby works out of doors and comes home freezing cold even though he has his thermals on.
I wrap his PJs around the hot water bottle and this keeps them toasty warm and aired.
Plus it is money saving if you cant have your heating on.
Dont wear damp clothes. I am lucky I have a small tumble dryer but only use it as a back up. I dry all clothes out of doors if there is the least sign of wind. But if they are a bit damp it only takes a couple of minutes in the tumble dryer to air them. That and ironing helps.

thanks will try this i used to wrap kids pjs round a hottie to warm them never thought to do it to air damp things will def do this thanks
i used to have a 7kg condenser tumble dryer but kids (teenagers would put 1 maybe 2 items in ) so i gave it to my eldest when hers stopped working as it was too big for our kitchen i had thought about getting a smaller one just for those odd items that aren't quite dry can't put stuff outside atm
i had my thermals on plus 5 more layers before i felt warm it's crazy you need lots of clothes to keep warm to keep heeting cost down or when you got no heat and then it creates tons of washing thats a pain to get dry can't win2nd purse challenge no040£0 Sealed pot challenge ???? £2 trolley find not counting small coins till end year0
