While i know to many thiis is sacralege, i hate the woodburner. Its in an ingle nook and most of the heat stays in the inglenook. Its not much less hungy than an open fire, depite having it looked at by a professional, and repeated attempts at re roping And sealing with ceramic paper. It very rarely damps down enough to still be ignited in the morning, it never throws out the same heat as an open fire. Ours is meant to be a reasonably good model, but in the refurb it will be going in to a smaller room and the inglenook returned to an open fire. Woodburners are safer, cleaner and generally more efficient, but i just do not get on as well with it.:o

Im with you on the woodburner about them not keeping in of a night, ive had 2 burners in other houses and felt the heat was going up the chimney quicker than I could throw the logs on,it was all set up proper etc etc, I also had a airwash system on it where the glass is never suppose to get black, yea mine was a !!!!!! to keep clean whatever fuel I used, id rather have a open fire in a grate than a burner again plus the dam things make so much dust............Thats why when we moved here we said enough is enough with fires we will have the GCH and the gas woodburner (lookalike ) stove, we have got a brick chimney but no way...... ...............

Weather , well hard frost over night, we now have a hailstorm and its got quite dark, so my heating is on............

Glad its not just me who finds they don't live up to the hype. Personally i love an open fire. It answers some deep primeval need within me that goes far beyond heat. But i really do look forward to this being against an underlying level of warmth.

Today we have come in at lunch time determined not to make the mistake of yesterday we have got the woodburner going now.

We were going back outsid,e but i think we have convinced each other its too cold to continue what we were doing. I know i am loved thoguh, dh has just gone outside to getmmore wood for the week and wrapped be up on the sofa in a duvet, a clanket and a hot water bottle on my feet and another for my back, and a cup of tea.

LIR yea I dont blame you to get inside earlier in the day, it has been bloody cold out today, espeically if your not a well person getting cold can be dangerous.........It really cold out now, I went out done the hens etc and didnt hang about , I always wear a good warm coat but the cold seems to go to the bones pretty quick..................
  • I have just put the heating on for an hour. DS2 is going for a bath in a while and its pretty cold upstairs.

Looking at the met office forecast its not going to be above 3 degrees for us all week. No really severe frosts forecast though so thats good.

I was interested in the woodburner discussion. I have fallen back in love with ours after we have started using decent coal instead of logs (ours is a multi-fuel). We keep it going 24/7 now and have used the heating a lot less. We are spending about £40-£50 a month on coal though so it will be interesting to see how the numbers work out at the end of winter. We have oil heating so its really expensive to run.

I somtimes read on here about people who claim to have woodburners that can heat the whole house. I always think they must either have a very small house or a very powerful woodburner that is going through a lot of fuel. If I was starting again I am not sure if I would bother with one, although it is lovely to sit in front of on an evening!

Ours is a big hyper efficient burner. But it struggles in the one room this year, where as my parents have a very small victorian style open fire in a room lower ceilings i admit, but a bigger room, and they open the doors and the warmth from that one room goes into the hall way and takes the chill off.

Edit: i have just checked my little record of temps. And have actually found i have recorded temps being lifted by a couple of degrees by the wood burner in the kitchen, topwo rooms away. But it has been when the wood burner has been on every day and kept going, rather than the same day lit first time. If my house were better insulated i am sure it would be better. Hey ho!

It snowed last night! Its very pretty up on the hills, but down here it is not that cold. The water troughs aren't frozen and its muddy not hard underfoot.

Woodburner on, no point in staying without today. I thinkk if i have it one every day until 'spring' i should have enough well seasoned wood to last now. Ofcourse, if i can keep sme of that till next year or for later chilly days i will be happier!

Can you not just heat the one room you mainly use.?.It will get alot colder this week with possible snow, today has been absolutely freezing cold and damp, I shudder when I see school children with out coats on, what is it with these children, its probaly not fashionable to wear one, and espeically having asthma on top of cold is not good.......Have you got water bottles. they are evry handy to stand your feet on when you are sitting down?.....................Do you qualify for insulation...? I think the core of your home is so cold its costs so much to get it up to a decent temperature..........Have you got any family that can lend you £10 until Wednesday..?...I often help both my sons out with some food etc etc, as theyve got families and I know how hard it is ............. I do hope you find some way to keep yourselves warm, I dont really know what else to say to you.....Take care in the cold......
  • thanks shergar i like the hot water bottle idea will try it in a bit house had loft done new roof and cavity wall stuff 2 years ago its council house i thought it might have something to do with the house being so cold it's never been this cold in here before i've lived here 28 years and i'm so used to having the heat on when it's cold anything below 16 is my cut off will root out hot water bottles for later will see if i can manage a bit extra on the gas on wednesday and get the house warmed up a bit not very good with weather stuff thanks for the heads up about it getting colder it's bad enough now i've got to go get my tabs from chemist so hopefully house wil feel warmer when i get back it's 2c outside and i've already got thermals on think another layer or two needed will blast the dryest with hair dryer to make sure its not damp hard to tell when your already cold will look forward to putting my feet on hwb when i get back will catch up later thanks mm
