SuzeQStan - our chimney blew down last year and the insurance company have been fannying and parping around since July 2023 to get it repaired. It has made drying clothes a pain in the rear.
I think I will have to amend the curtains - someone in the house (not me!) likes delicate lacy curtains that barely qualify but I will be changing them for something much more heatable. I also think we will be closing doors to the front room since we spend all the time in the back room, instead, as that room has a massive window which isn't the most reliable.
Will report back on the hot drinks situation and the moving thing Florenceem - I work from home and am married to the computer so I do not know how well that second part will work. But I do think perhaps a heat pad will be better and definitely a heating pad for my bed.7 -
@PrincessMellie - oh no that sounds really annoying about the delay on your chimney repair. Have you tried sending them lots of friendly emails - super polite but frequent so they get the job done just so you stop emailing/ringing them? 🤣👍🏻Hope they get you sorted soon - July 2023 is a shocking delay!Lancashire

Worth sending a request to one of the weekend money/consumer gurus of the weekend national press like qkwtey Morley of a telegraph. Am sure moe national papers have one. The thought of being mentioned nationally is often enough to expedite action. Or perhaps contact Trading Standards office at your local council. Also complain to your insurance company thwt they're using a deadbeat repairer. - perhaps not a recognised member of Checkatrade or some other recognised body.4

I have been for my walk round the park, and had a mug of cocoa, so for the moment I am good and warm.

Primrose - We've called again today - the problem was getting the heatus engineer for months and months and so I... politely but firmly pointed out today that it has been fifteen months, we are now on our second winter, we are getting damp in the house because it is so cold and our electric bill is vast. I pointed out that we have two vulnerable people in this house, with disabilities, and it doesn't look good on Nationwide to still be delaying this.
We'll receive a callback with the roofer's start day tomorrow. Apparently.
I sharn't be holding my breath for fear of passing away and letting them off the hook.
I have learned from this thread that keeping feet in particular warm is a necessity and I have a hot water bottle on my feet. Seems to be working - no longer shivering!7 -
SuzeQStan - If they don't get a move on, I will be speaking to a legal person because this is ridiculous. Will never go with WationNide again!6

You have my sympathy. We had British Gas homecare plumbing out on Monday for a leaking toilet. Thought it had been fixed but last night about 2 am my husband was woken by the sound of trickling water and found the toilet bowl was continually flushing itself. Hehad to turn the water off and earliest time they can get an emergency plumber out is next Monday! I,m totally disabled - can't walk now so feel absolutely helpless at helping out in these crises.I don't think many of these companies have enough skilled employeee. Why are universities charging £9,000+ a year for tuition fees for useless lightweight degrees and not encouraging more technical and engineering/practical skills which the nation needs to keep itself functioning? Rant over!8

Primrose we have had that problem in the past and it was the ballcock ( floating plastic ball in the cistern) sometimes they come off the plastic hinge slightly or develop a crack. To avoid the toilet running and having to switch the water off use a spatula or something else to hand to prop it up above water level as a temporary fix. I hope this helps you out.9

The heating definitely isnt on here. Its 11 degrees outside and 17 inside. I believe temperatures will drop significantly next week so I will be ready with my electric blanket on the bed, the electric throw plugged in and my oversided, incredibly heavy, hand knitted jumper nearby.Current debt approximately 5000
Goal- Zero debt by mid 2025
Savings in 2026- an emergency fund of 50006 -
Mine's been on and off intermittently for the past month as the weather here has been so up and down lately, but it will definitely be on next week if the forecast is correct. my thermostat is set to turn on if it drops below 15degrees during the day.7
