Is your heating ON or OFF?

I think this fits in here. I like the Granny Weatherwax quotation. Clothes layering for warmth, food poverty, and no hot water? Is this the present and future in Britain?

It's -2 here this morning so heating is on but fortunately no snow here as yet. Take care everyone.

Most definitely on! It's been snowing overnight as promised - the roads and pavements are clear (thanks gritters) but I doubt what remains on the grass will disappear any time soon since daytime temperatures are hovering around 2 deg and in minus figures overnight.Be kind to others and to yourself too.5

There isn't any snow here, but it is chilly and rainy. The heating has gone on for an hour or two as I am coming off a lurgy and my husband is too.5

Snow is here but roads were pretty much clear by 8am. Heating on for an hour this morning and I’ve got layers on plus fingerless gloves and leccy blanket whilst I WFHLancashire

Yesterday felt bitterly cold so I relented, mainly because I have a pathological fear of pipes freezing and wanted to test the system for the whole house before we get to that stage of chilliness. My first task was to find 2 x AA batteries for the thermostat and then I set the heating to come on twice a day at just 15degC - so not an aggressive heat by any means. The SMETS 2 was not receiving data so I couldn't see how much I used last night.
When I checked the smart meter at 8am this morning it was a whopping £4. If I confine myself to an hour in the morning and 3 in the afternoon, I am looking at £8/day = £240 / month = £1k over the coldest 4 months of the year, which is is just not affordable.
I have no doubts that the poorest pensioners that need the £300 to cover them over the winter are going to suffer greatly. No man is worth crawling on this earth.
So much to read, so little time.9 -
I know this has been mentioned before but it,s do important to keep your body extremities warm in this cold weather, especially if you're having to economise on heating.
So wear thick socks or even boots to keep feet warm. Wear a woollen hat or cap and scarf to keep your head and neck warm and invest in some woollen fingerless gloves to prevent your hand from chilling. And if you can move around regularly indoors do, even for a few minutes at a time to keep your circulation going. Even sitting in a chair and "Walking on the spot" for a few minutes every hour will help.
i fear this ewrly cold spell and the loss of the winter fuel allowance is really going to hit a lot of elderly people hard so it,s up to us all to share any tips which will help elderly people to survive. Christmas presents this year should perhaps certainly focus on hot water bottles, insulated mugs, fingerless gloves and other practical things rather than that usual box of chocolates.
i,m surprised the energy suppliers have got together to offer a national energy gift token, redeemable against any energy company for either gas or electricity. I,m sure that would be welcome in many households. Surely it's not beyond the bounds of the well paid chief executives of those enterprises to put their heads together and come up with something?

I do wonder at how warm some people feel that they need to be. It's currently 13 in my sitting room and I'm not finding it at all unpleasant. I'm wearing a T-Shirt and (unbuttoned) fleece overshirt, jeans, sports socks and fleecy slipper socks. Oh and the door is open because next door's cat is currently asleep on the sofa next to me!Debt Free Wannabe by 1 December 2027
