Is your heating ON or OFF?

Our house is quite cold. Or maybe it's just that we're used to a small two bedroom bungalow and are now living in a large 3 bedroom house. Obviously more space to heat. We've really had no choice about putting the heat on, as the toddlers can only be bundled up so much. But while DH is all for putting it on more often, I have it set on a timer. It does get a little chilly, but not for long, and during the day it's "put on a sweater" and at night, well, you're under the duvet anyway, right?MSE mum of DS(7), and DS(4) (and 2 adult DCs as well!)DFW Long haul supporters No 210:snow_grin Christmas 2013 is coming soon!!! :xmastree:0

Its a howling gale outside and very cold, forecast is for a north wind next week and that will rbing snow. WHOOOPEEEE ITS WINTER!! Hot water bottles out and get knitting at the fire !!
I think we must live close to each other. It's wild here - the trees are really bending. I'm sitting here wrapped in a fleece blanket. It must be cold because my hubby has told me to put on the gas fire - and he's been really tight lately!
I'm thinking of getting some long johns for myself. I hate wearing tights but my legs have been cold, despite wearing jeans.0 -

Although my heating is 'ON' - I'm still finding that it's barely coming on at all (possibly a few minutes around 7.00am and again for a few minutes around 10.00pm)! The thermostat is STILL set at 18 - so it's obvious that it's hardly dropping below that at the moment.
However I am noticing the difference when I've been outside and come back indoors again. Some of the elderly people that I work with have got their heating blasting out at 25 - 30, despite my warnings to them about high bills etc.
Same here, Ollie, ours is set to come on for half an hour mornings and then for the evening but i tend to only leave it for half an hour in the evening and if the rads haven't come on by then turn it back off, don't want to waste energy heating the water. Ours is also at 18.
Can't believe people have heating at 25-30. reminds me of a housemate i had who used to wander round in barefeet and a vest top and complain she was cold, hoiking the heating up....I used to be constantly turning it back down!Mum to gorgeous baby boy born Sept 2010:j0 -
Help, am really struggling with not putting the heating on, any tips?
We have it on for an hour in the morning when OH gets up and then from 7pm until 10pm when it starts to get really cold, we try to get to bed before 10. I tend to put it on if I feel cold before then but have limited myself to only after 5pm. It is just me and the baby (3 weeks) home during the day and currently we spend much of the time snuggled up on the sofa in blankets! Which keeps us warm but doesn't allow much to get done around the house!
I don't know how well the house is insulated as we rent but it's a 1980s mid terrace which was originally built without CH. We have got no neighbours on one side and on the other side they are out during the day. I think there is loft insulation but don't know about walls. We have got double glazing.
Apart from putting the heating on 24/7 what can we do? I'm not sitting around in a t shirt, but dressed warmly. Baby is too but I am worried he gets cold during baths/nappy changes. I also get a bit chilly when breastfeeding as I have to half strip off! Our heating has a timer system but not for separate rooms and I can't work out how to set the thermostat as it doesn't have temperatures on it.I don't believe and I never did that two wrongs make a right0 -

Mine is actually set on the timer to come on 7.00am-9.00am and then 7.00pm-11.00pm but it's still only actually 'kicking in' very briefly at 7am and again around 10pm. Probably only really 'ON' for around 20 mins maximum.
Then again, I've been using the SC quite a lot this last couple of weeks, so that being on helps to keep the kitchen warm. Also had the 'flame effect' on the electric fire (but not the fire!) - psychological trick

I'm currently carrying a hot water bottle around with me in the house - it's soo cold. I did wonder whether I might challenge myself not to put the heating on at all this winter - just wrap up, spend hours in libraries and on trains etc. It would be interesting to see how much I could conserve - withour passing out!0

I just put kids in bedroom to watch video and with wind blowing and our rubbish windows its freezing, im going to get more of that foam tape stuff next week i think. Ive hung fleece blankets over window to make it a bit warmer in meantime. I would put up bubble wrap or that window film up but i think the kids would just rip it off  :mad:0

we're trying to hold out at much as possible before we give up and put on the heating, We've had the hot water bottle out, put the second pair of curtains up on the patio doors, and are layering up.
Trouble is it's sooooo cold!0
