Webpage not found even when connected
He's with AOL and didn't get mych joy through the helpline who kept saying something was wrong with his router. A Netgear one recommended by AOL.
With my limited expertise I established that his router was fine and that it was his LAN cable port wasnt working
I managed to set up his router via LAN cable(RJ45) using my own laptop and receive a perfect signal both wired and wirelessly getting web pages without problem.
The problem now is that although his laptop picks up his router wirelessly and shows as being connected it still shows up as "webpage not found"
I have tried everthing I can think of but no joy
His laptop is running with Vista while mine has Windows 7.
Oh, and I also tried using an old PCMCIA network card on his laptop to establish a wired connection but for some reason it wont fully insert. I can only get it to go about halfway in so thats not a an option either
Any advice on troubleshooting procedures covering this issue would be much apreciated
Thanks

what makes you think his LAN cable port isn;t working? that'd usually be very low down my list of suspects... can he connect to the router itself? what browser is he using? same problem with more than one browser?0

AOL's browser is known for causing problems. Does he have the version of Internet Explorer on the system it would have been shipped with and does that work? If not can you download something like Firefox onto your own PC and transfer it via a USB stick to the crippled one? Alternatively, maybe he has a firewall blocking stuff it shouldn't. Just to test it, try disabling any anti-virus or firewall he has installed.

I was using Internet explorer all along because I hate AOL's software personally.
I will try adding firefox like you said and disabling Norton/firewall etc when I get back there
First thing I did was plug in a LAN cable to his computer. Nothing came up when I tried 192.168.0.1 where it does on my laptopwhat makes you think his LAN cable port isn;t working? that'd usually be very low down my list of suspects... can he connect to the router itself? what browser is he using? same problem with more than one browser?
Device manager shows that it's working correctly but it still wont show up in network and sharing centre.
Anyway I established on my laptop that the router is working fine wired or wireless.
His laptop is picking it up and connecting wirelessly as it states that it is connected I just cant get it to load webpages.
It's not the first time I've come across this problem and I've usually managed to get through it by trial and error. This one almost has me beat.
What I'd like to know if I can find a list of procedures that a fully trained technitian would follow in such a case.
I'm sure that this problem, isn't uncommonIWasLookingBackToSeeIfSheWasLookinBackToSeeIfIWasLookinBackAtHer.....0 -
Check reset DNS Control Panel Networking Local Area Connection Properties
Internet Protocol V4 click on then properties .
Usual is to find Obtain DNS servers automatically button ticked .
That fails try 156-154-70-1 and 192-168-11-1 in the use the following DNS servers boxes as they are working right now .
Type CMD in the RUN box
at the prompt enter ping https://www.bbc.com a return says internet working .
Via Device manager Uninstall the LAN . Reboot and it should reinstall the drivers .
Reset Router to factory defaults usually a pinhole switch on the back . Then re enter ISP details and set up .
Turn AV and Firewall off .
Run web browser in Safe Mode .

Wonder if its set to use a poxy server. In Internet Options in Interweb Exploder, go to Connections and make sure the proxy server box isn't checked.0

No, thats the first thing I checkedIts not a simple case of the browser working offline is it?
I had noticed that and did use stops and not hyphensFirstly IP addresses are written with dots and not hyphens, and secondly the second one looks like a DNS in your LAN. I doubt that it works for someone else
I broughr his laptop home with me and same problem.
Connect to shows my router in range . I put in the WEP key and it shows as connected but still no web pages
Still this problem persistsIWasLookingBackToSeeIfSheWasLookinBackToSeeIfIWasLookinBackAtHer.....0 -
If you boot in safe mode but with networking enabled, will it connect? If it does you'll then have to figure out what's causing the problem, but at least it will be a step in the right direction!
