I can really vouch for the 'nitty gritty' comb combined with a leave in conditioner loaded with drops of tea tree oil.
Don't forget that the nitty gritty comb is available on prescription - check out their web page and go armed with the prescription details available on their homepage.(link in earlier posts)
It does involve LOTS of combing, but it's much easier with this comb than with any other - and unlike many of the combs I've tried in the past, it actually gets the 'nits' as well as the lice out.

Tea tree is recommended on many sites, and I recently saw an article about a report in a dermatology journal where they found that coconut shampoo and conditioner (has to have actual coconut extract in it) seemed to cause the lice the most difficulty in moving out of the way of the comb and also seemed to deter reinfestation (possibly the scent, as with essential oils?). As coconut conditioner is usually dead cheap (usually 99p a bottle in Superdrug or Morrison's), would probably be worth using that when combing out. Superdrug do tubs of coconut oil too - that might be worth using overnight.

Re the essential oils, in addition to tea tree, a mix of lavender and rosemary seems effective. The other point, made frequently on American websites, but completely ignored by European ones, is that adult lice can live for up to 48 hours off a person's head, thus they recommend vacuuming the mattress and washing all the sheets and towels the day of a bug-bust, otherwise if there are any on the bedding, they'll just crawl back on - doesn't mean you have to change every single day, because hopefully the first combing will get rid of the live ones plus most of the eggs, then there's about 7 days before the next lot hatch. Guess maybe anti-dust mite bedding might help here - if it stops dust mites, should stop lice getting into the mattress, as they're a lot bigger.

The nitty gritty comb is very effective, although it's quite harsh if the hair is very long. It is possible to buy black as well as white plastic nit combs (Morrison's and Lloyd's do them), - it's a lot easier to see the nits on the black one, and the lice are big enough to be able to see them anyway.

mayonnaise and a metal tooth nit comb.
leave mayon on the hair for at least 3 hours, then comb through. wash hair in lukewarm water, then do again the next day. do for 3 days, then again a week later. it not only kills the lice it also suffocates the eggs. the oil content suffocates, the vinegar dehydrates and the egg is just a really good conditioner!

we buy the smartprice mayo for nit relief on the rare occasions minime has them.

4 drops of teatree oil, three of lavendar, one dollop of conditioner and a spray bottle filled with water are combined to make minime's detangling spray. shake before use. not had nits in over a year despite 3 infestations in her class.

  • Hello I really need help, I'm 18. I always used to get Headlice when I was younger but this time is worse, my hairs all matted and I have a really bad infestation. I have loads of sores on my scalp and ears, they smell so they could be infected 😷 please help
  • If you have sores and think you have an infection then you really should go see a doctor - there's no way of knowing if specialist head lice products would make your scalp worse.
Making mistakes is not the end of the world, though it often feels that way!
  • People are now confused about their head lice and dandruff because both of them causes a serious infection in our sculp. TinyLocks, a high standard lice and nits removing company likes to deal with your scalp problem with a soft methods and products.
  • We discovered something that works, specially with our kids really curly hair. We spray it in and just wash out the dead lice. Lice Ease its called. Kills them with something that melts their skin without hurting the kids scalp.
