  • Hi to everyone this is my first post.

I have struggled for ages with my daughters hair and the little visitors, tried baby oil, conditioner, chemical treatments, plastic thin tooth combs, metal combs, nothing seemed to get the eggs off her hair and it was becoming a real problem.

Then one day while trawling through all the info on the internet cam across a metal comb called nitty gritty, well it is brilliant, has long metal teeth and is kind of ribbed along the teeth, it just grabs the eggs right off the hair.

It was £10, quite expensive compared to the other combs I had bought but it is by far the best thing I have found.

The only time we have a problem now is if I have not been particularly vigilant.

If only everyone at her school treated on a regular basis I am sure the problem would be much better.

We had nits last week and every thing seems to be all clear, but i am still in the process of the wet combing.
Anyway, so its past a week since i have changed the beddings, and i noticed quite a few of dark coloured nits on our bed sheets right under where you would place the pillows. but with no hairs stuck onto them. arhhh!
I dont know if there are dead but what if they are alive these nits? so they can still hatch right?-as long as they are in warm temperture (like; right under our pillows, all snuggly for them). Do i have to keep changing our bedding everyday,
I changed our bedding right after we had an application of DERBAC. but the chemicals aint really reliable so they may of been another infestation on our heads and under our pillows. i cant see wot is combed out of our hair as the conditioner makes this hard to see ( i just comb it though)
Do u ever checked under you pillows....?
    Maybe u should tonight......

piaseckyj you are absolutly right about his nit comb. I bought one myself and they are a godsend. could not be doing without mine.

I remember the nit nurse in school when i went, the school my kids go to is over run by the little buggers and the school dont do anything about it, really gets me mad.

Anyway, everyone buy this comb cos its brill. I dont even wet comb.I just use it everyday after I have brushed thier hair( to make sure there are no knots)

gets all the eggs out and everything, its disgustiong the first time you do it cos of all the stuff that comes out. but well worth it.

  • hi, i work in a primary school and i am forever catching head lice. Its costing loads to keep going to the chemist and most of the time the lotions don't work.
iv not yet tried the electric combs, anyone used one?

Anyone got any cheap ways of getting shut of them and repelling them for when i go back to work in september?

Oh one point, im not a teacher so please dont reply saying im on more then enough money to keep paying out.

Costs only the price of an ordinary, non-electric head lice comb from chemist and a lot of time - wash hair every day with plenty of conditioner and comb them out thoroughly. You have to repeat this every day ideally for a good couple of weeks to get rid of all the hatched eggs before they get a chance to breed. It does work if you do it religiously and it's better than lots of unpleasant chemicals which aren't always effective anyway. Doesn't stop you getting them again though - the usual advice about tying hair back, using tea tree oil based shampoo/conditioner and trying not to get too close to the childrens' heads - but no guarantee against reinfestation!
  • My sister is still in primary school and has had them twice. Since the 2nd time mum has made sure she has used tea tree shampoo (bought nice and cheap from the local bodycare store). She has never caught them since. Tea tree also worked wonders for me for peace of mind, came in contact with someone through work and in my job we have to deal with all kinds of people. Needless to say it was a hot shower with half a bottle of tea tree shampoo that night.....just in case!!!

    Hi maroon_jelly,

Welcome to the Old Style board. :)

I doubt very much that anyone on Old Style would give you a hard time, whether or not you're a teacher. Head lice is something that can affect us all at one time or another.....unfortunately. :o

We do have an older thread on this subject, so I'll merge your thread with it as it makes it easier if all the suggestions can be kept together. As always replies are listed in date order, so you'll need to read from the beginning to see all the replies.

Good luck with sorting it out before September. :)

    Hiya,

I asked my hairdresser what was best to avoid the critters and she also suggested tea tree shampoo and conditioner, they dont like the smell apparently. Also said the leave in conditioners are good as the lice cant get a proper grip on your hair. Last tip was to always wear your hair tied well back as though lice dont jump theey will crawl from head to head so any contact with other peoples hair isnt great.
