I would buy all the empty shops locally and put them to use.
Quite what that use would be would depend on the location. But our local parade is still lacking since the demise of Woolworths, for example. Other places might need a cafe. Or a butchers, etc.
Making a profit or loss wouldn't really matter, so the shops wouldn't have to be viable. And by selling what was needed I hopefully wouldn't adversely affect the other shops locally (or else I'd have to take on their premises, too!).

I think vacant shops are so demoralising. My plan would provide employment and hopefully help kick-start the local economy.
Once I'm done with the local shops I'll start moving further afield.
  • A bigger house in my home town, detached stone built with a nice sized garden. Pay off my brothers' mortgages. Buy a house for each of my daughters, pay off their debts

Then the fun would begin. I love to paint and draw. I am not very good at it, but I love doing it. So I would spend a year or two doing lots of paintings, then somehow I would contrive to buy them myself for large sums of money, not sure how, but with £300 million I'm sure I could find a way. Then I would see how many other people would start buying my rubbish paintings for large amounts of money

i would give a million pounds to each of 298 people, then each of those people would be millionaires. it would start off with friends and family (there arent many of them) and would move on to lost aquaintences and people i had worked with, then to people i might have read about in the news.

i would have to calculate the capital gains tax (or does the recipient pay that?)

that would leave me with 2 million for me and my partner. i would pay off the mortgage, thats only 60k, plus debts which are about 4k around about.

then get some stuff done in the house, thats only about 10k even if we really splash out

then put a small amount in a savings account that we can access, then put the rest in a high yeild savings account where it pays us income. even a million at 4% would give...?? cant work it out, is it 40kpa? if so, thats more than enough for us to live on with no mortgage and no work outgoings, and have the odd day out and holiday

im not very high maintanence but would want to be able to eat out a lot and shop in waitrose

I would buy a large house with plenty of grounds in the same town I am in now.
I would buy a family friendly car (quite possibly an MPV) and also a smaller one for me as a run around.
I would employ a live in housekeeper/cook so that the cat never had to go into a cattery and there would be someone there to keep an eye on the boys if I wanted to go out.
Youngest son would go to a fee paying school with smaller and quieter classes (middle son would want to stay where he is).
We would still holiday in the UK for our main summer holiday (buying a top of the range caravan and have it sited) but we would also have some overseas holidays.
I would make sure my parents, siblings, ex mother in law and ex husband are ok (well it would be nice for the boys to have someone nice to stay if ex ever did decide he wanted to see them).

I would also, as a charitable contribution, give the local high schools (which are now under the same management), an amount as a lump sum so that all children would have the option of a free school meal, a uniform grant, a laptop grant and a school trips grant, regardless of their benefit/working status.....I know only too well that there are some who are just outside of the cut off for the assistance for the above items which then puts them in a much worse position than someone who does claim benefits and are eligable for free school meals, something I find completely unfair.

The rest would be invested, held as savings etc to provide an income with the possibility of also having someone to care for the boys so I could go into some employment of my choosing to keep my brain alive.

Keep battling on, I will get there eventually

You sound like a decent bird Sue. Keep your chin up darling :T

I'm going to give you some of my 300 million now. I'm not spending it all on hookers and coke after all. :rotfl:

Right I'm off to Nana Plaza. Goodnight all.;)

Firstly I wouldn't tell anyone in the world apart from my OH, how much we had, nobody would EVER know.

I would do the most important thing, I would pay for the best medical care for my family, that money can buy.
I would make them all financially happy, a million each should be OK and mean they still have quite a normal life.

Then I'd buy the best garden digging fork and splitting axe in the world. I've been racking my brains and I can't think of anything else I need.

Then I'd have the top back specialist in the world to sort out my stoopid back.

Then I'd spend the rest of the time worrying about what to do with the rest :D

This is a good one. I would buy up loads of local commercial properties and start up interesting shops that could run at a loss, staffed by local "characters" selling fun random things. I would set up a second hand book shops based on the business model of Black Books, ie I would insult the customers and choose not to serve people if they annoyed me. A lot of the time I might not open up, and would just sit in an armchair in the window reading.

Oh, the other thing I'd love to do is buy a new house and put this one on Freegle / Freecycle. Just something that would really amuse me.

£300 million pounds? Part of me would feel like using the money as Edmond did, in the Count of Monte Cristo.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j8zVglXFO7A&feature=related
Jacopo: Woo-hooo! Hahaha! Zatara; (slang name given to Edmond by the pirates/smugglers = "Driftwood") the boat can not hold no more (gold) and there are at least 8 more boat-loads down there!

Edmond/Dopester: (Face blank - eyes in the distance - deep in thought)

Jacopo: Do you not understand? You are wealthier than any man I have ever heard of. Whatever your problems were, they are over. What do you want to buy?

    Edmond/Dopester: Revenge.

    Jacopo: Okay. Revenge. Who?

Edmond/Dopester: Danglars, Villefort.. Fernand and Mercedes. (Gordon Brown, Tony Blair, Kate Barker and Blanchflower - and a list of many others)

Jacopo: Right. We kill these people, then we spend the treasure.

Edmund: No we will study them. Learn their weaknesses.

Jacopo: Why not just kill them? I'll do it. I'll run up to Paris; bam bam bam bam; I'm back before week's end. We spend the treasure. How is this a bad plan?

Edmond/Dopester: Death is too good for them. They must suffer as I suffered. They must see their world, all they hold dear, ripped from them as it was ripped from me.
Seriously though? A nice house (upto £1m), £1m between family (house for sister), 1/2m into savings for myself, and the rest into a foundation granting investment to entrepreneurs + direct to other good causes.
