What shopping bags do you use?

I distinctly remember going shopping with my mum and she had net shopping bags. They crumpled down to fit in your pocket
and were constructed with hexagon shape string or nylon stuff which expanded immensely when shopping was put in it. I haven't seen them for
years but I'm sure would be great to deal with things nowadays.0

Ah, grand Pinkmami. I'm in Ethiopia Gwyn :rotfl: or Bethesda as it's otherwise known.
I don't mind feeling like my nan too much, smart woman she was. Half Welsh and half Manx, she lived through some pretty tough times."We always find something, hey Didi, to give us the impression we exist?" Samuel Beckett, Waiting for Godot.

Plastic bags cost €22c here, govt put a tax on several years ago and IMHO it was one of the best things ever, as previously every hedge and fence in the countryside had been festooned with decomposing plastic. You will still see people buying bags at checkout as if they were free, I have several bags, some insulated to take food you need to keep cool, I use cotton ones too and never want to go back to free bags as not everybody disposes of them properly

Same here - my nan's a cracking lady at 96 & still going strong. But I'd still feel granny-like tugging a trolley!
Won't knock those who do though!

I have a couple of French supermarket bags that beat all my others hands down for heavy shopping (we take them away camping with us for storing cooking stuff in the porch etc, as well as to festivals for hauling booze, snacks, fancy dress!).
They are like the re-enforced plastic ones from Mr T/marks etc, the more boxy shape ones that have woven fabric handles? But inside the handle they have a length of plastic tubing, which creates a sturdy round handle that doesn’t cut into your hands at all.
Has anyone seen anything similar in this country? I think they were from spar or somewhere similar – wish I’d bought more now!
Oh, as for string bags – marks do them in black and pink. Although they expand to hold a huge amount of stuff, they don’t pack down that small, so I hardly ever use the one I bought

It's the Sobin a'r Smaeliaid song Gwlad y Rasta Gwyn about the old Pesda. Never fails to make me laugh, like Cymru, Lloegr a Llanrwst by Y Cyrff.
Sorry to go off topic there - good for a laugh though."We always find something, hey Didi, to give us the impression we exist?" Samuel Beckett, Waiting for Godot.

Moorhen, does your string bag fold down into a little round bun shape? These were quite popular in the 70's and so useful. I have been searching for one or a pattern for ages so any information would be gratefully received.Mortgage and Debt free but need to increase savings pot. :think:0

I think I have a crochet pattern for a net bag that folds into a pouch. Could probably dig it out and scan it if it would be any use to you?0

            Hi Ches,
My bags fold into their own tiny drawstring bag which is attached to the top of the bag.
They are made by a company called Onya (one of them is a rucksack and it is called Onya back) and a friend bought them for me as a birthday present about 3 years ago.

Do any of you remeber the blue box's with orange handles that mr Sainsbugs had about 15 or so years ago, at the time they had trollies that the box's fittied into I think at the time they where quite expensive about £ 5 a box, well I work for mr S and some customers still use these box's even though we do not have the trollies they fitted into.To me that was money well spent having lasted all these years, they are also much easier to pack and much easier to lift in and out the car and they have other use when not being used for shopping i know I would use these if they brought them back
