I have several of the string/turtle bags. Bought them in Marks & Spencers.
Fabulous as they stretch & hold so much. Wash well, weigh nothing & one is always in my handbag.
I too am in Wales & ready. Got a lovely Eco Catt trolley from QVC Outlet - huge & pink!

  • what the problem is with these, most of the carrier bags now are bio-degradable, so your knitted plastic bag will end up crummbling away

Trust me the co-op ones definitely biodegrade. How do I know? well when clearing out my MIL place I picked up a pile of old co-op bags that she had saved and they fluttered like confetti all over the place :rotfl:

:rotfl:Snap - Going somewhere with my sister & on way she had to 'pop' into Lidl's for a loaf.
One trolley full of bargains later but no carrier bags, she nipped out to car as has bags stash there. Brings them in & they have disintergrated into confetti. Had to sweep up the strewn mess off their packing shelf :o

I have a couple of those and tho they are good to keep in your bag. they do stretch and things tend to stick out /fall out. Last time I used one it managed to pop open a bottle of washing up liquid...:rotfl:ok for clothes shopping etc tho..

Funny enough, I was having this conversation with my husband the other day. A few years ago, when the campaigns to reuse bags really started, I was set dead against the idea (looking back I have no idea why :)) It all seemed too complicated to remember to take bags with me, and a lot of the time my shopping trips were spontaneous and so bags were not present.

Now I have a HUGE collection of reusables, ranging from the lovely Orla Keily & Cath Kidston supermarket bags, to ones I have made myself. I love how they are much more interesting to look at than a plastic carrier bag, and also they hold more and have nice soft handles that don't cut into your hands.

I also agree that shops seem to be using less durable plastics or something, Not sure if it's simple cost cutting or a way to make people bring their own bags... this usually means that the odd occasion I do forget to carry a bag with me, I end up double-bagging my shopping to prevent it ending up on the pavement on the walk home... which surely negates any benefits.

  • due to being charged for bags here last year, i bought my mum one of these
    http://www.zpm.com/products/living/trolley-dolly/default.aspx

    she loves it
it fastens onto the trolley, has space on the outside for your shopping list, has a trolley token and 6 x nylon Vest-style carrier bags 2 x Shoulder bags, 2 x Short-Handled carrier bags, 10 x fruit & veg net bags with cord lock closing fastener. The interior nylon bags will hold 13.7Kg per bag

so she never has to even have fruit and veg bags etc as they are tare weight
maybe not the most mse solution, but solved a present problem for me at the same time
i got her the black one

Ooooh, Pinkmami, where are you in Wales? I see you're from the People's Republic of Snowdonia like me :j and either nationalist or a Cymraes cymraeg.

I thought I was alone!! :rotfl: Trolleys are definately useful round our way, flaming 40 degree inclines with plastic bags digging into my hands are no fun whatsoever!

    im in north wales too:j

I use a selection of bags from various supermarkets mainly fabric or hessian type but I have one big grouse.

A certain very well known bookshop/stationers/card shop (not sure what they would call themselves) charge 5p for a carrier bag when I buy a book or similar that I obviously dont want to get dirty. What is wrong with old fashioned paper bags for these items. Yes I can take a carrier bag with me for such things but I cannot guaruntee it will be totally clean.

I realise shops are trying to be environmentally freindly and cut their sosts but please bear in mind not all shopping can be lumped together.

  • Sorry to resurect this thread but I wondered if any of you guys knew of any bags that fold up small into a pouch but that have long handles? I live on the 4th floor of a flat building so prefer to have the weight on shoulders not hands when walking up the stairs. Quite a few of the ones I've seen have short handles.

I live in Wales and need some bags to pop in my handbag so I don't have to pay for bags. I always use re-usable bags for food shopping, but these live in my car and are not foldable for my handbag. I have a few of the 10p reuseable ones from supermarkets but I want sturdier ones than those. I am eyeing up the Trolley Dolly ones though!

My flatmate has some lovely Cath Kidston-esque ones but they cost £7 each and I don't really want to pay that much per bag as I'm after about 4 of them!

    Thanks in advance :)

There are these, quite expensive, but it is for 4

Or if you want to make your own, you could just make the handles longer on this:
