But many believe their life cannot be complete unless they OWN them, and are prepared to go into debt to do it. Bit pathetic really.

Along with other useless gadgets, yes.

As well as items such as designer trainers, cost a couple of quid to produce in a chinese factory and retail at over £100.

St. Augustine of Hippo, born in Africa about 4th century AD. Major early Church figure. He wrote it in his book Confessions, which is in Latin. I can't remember the Latin version, but he wrote:

As a youth I prayed, "Give me chastity and continence, but not yet".

    I love that quote.

16 is more minimal than we could go - though we don't have a dishwasher, and I'd happily bin the steamer, personally - what's wrong with a saucepan, and a sieve if you're being healthy? :)

Steamers are much more efficient than a pan and a sieve - we use it every day, I think.

Oh god I hate this comparison.

Height of technology then compared to old technology today to make a point.

It's like me saying cars have gone up in price, afterall, a fiesta in 1981 cost way less than a BMW X5 does today.

If you are going to compare a video recorder, which was the height of technology at the time, compare it to the height of technology today...

Try a blu ray recorder.... cus thats the same comparison.

    Very healthy for the Veg.

Reminds me of my fav Spitting image sketch:)
Thatcher sits in a restaurant with the rest of her cabinet (Howe, Tebbit, etc.). The waiter comes over and asks: "Would you like to order meat, ma'am?" Thatcher: "Yes. Rare." Waiter: "Vegetables?" Thatcher, making a broad arm movement to the boys: "Oh, they'll have the same".

Fair enough. We manage fine, although at some point our 1990 TV will need replacing, because of the digital changeover.
