The problem was people who borrowed did not make enough of an effort to check their own income and outgoings before borrowing money. Borrowers need self-discipline, don't blame the banks.
When did I blame anyone, banks or otherwise?
However, to respond to your point, the banks are the ones taking the risk with depositors money, so they should be the ones making sure that the borrowers can afford the loan. If things go really bad, a borrower can simply go bankrupt and walk away.0 -
In 1981 a normal VHS video recorder cost around £450  today you can buy a DVD player for £30, I don't think they could afford more than 13 items
Oh god I hate this comparison.
Height of technology then compared to old technology today to make a point.
It's like me saying cars have gone up in price, afterall, a fiesta in 1981 cost way less than a BMW X5 does today.
If you are going to compare a video recorder, which was the height of technology at the time, compare it to the height of technology today...
Try a blu ray recorder.... cus thats the same comparison.

All things that I reckon just gather dust (-:...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -

But many believe their life cannot be complete unless they OWN them, and are prepared to go into debt to do it. Bit pathetic really.0 -

I think we need to declutter - got to 40 and got bored counting.
Too many kitchen appliances, odd computer bits, bits of stereos etc.
V few of them mine, though - if it was up to me, I'd go minimimal on the technology.
Is it a man thing, I wonder?0 -
Fair enough. We manage fine, although at some point our 1990 TV will need replacing, because of the digital changeover....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0

Bin anything you've not used for a couple of months, I reckon!...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -
Many are more interested in the thrill of buying and owning, rather than actually using this stuff.0

I would if it were mine - virtually all of it is oh's though so don't feel I can.
Just counted - stuff I'd keep takes me to 22, I think?
Not lots of kitchen stuff, but tv, video & dvd X 2 bumps up numbers. Have included kids stereo and just realised forgot their radio/mp3 type thing they were given as gifts - can't bin their stuff either...
16 is more minimal than we could go - though we don't have a dishwasher, and I'd happily bin the steamer, personally - what's wrong with a saucepan, and a sieve if you're being healthy?0
