I started on 16% with YBS (or Huddersfield & Bradford as they were known then) in February 1982. If I hadn't taken an interest only/low cost endowment mortgage I could have shaved off another 0.5 percentage points and paid 'only' 15.5%.

Seem to remember 10-12% plus pay rises at the time though, so wasn't all bad news!

Ah you didn't have a good union then YB, in 1980 and 1981 Ford Motor Company handed over 23% and 19% but that was probably due to the 9 week all-out strike we had the year before... Only wish I had got a mortgage before those pay rises, plenty of of overtime around then until the 3 day week came in, lol

Back to savings rates, I had a 6.85% fixed rate bond with Northern Rockers, Guernsey which has just closed so now have to be content with half of that rate on my UK savings. I get 6.15% now on a Treasury Bond in the Philippines but must admit feeling a bit nervous about leaving £50k lodged with that crowd. TB prices have gone up over 2% recently so may sell those soon and re-invest in equities if we get another dip soon.

At the end of 2008 Halifax had a 7% rate fixed for 3 months or 6 months. But I got to the back end of 2009 using Egg's 6.3% and Bank of Scotland's 6.5% easy access accounts.

Egg's 3.25% is my current home.
