As I never looked into them before recession and only now and I seeing the painfully low rates, what sort of interest rates were around when times were good?
6 - 8% on fixed term bonds, with 12% for the A&L regular saver iirc

I think I had an average of about 9 or 10% on my savings

The best one has to be Egg's 6.3% fixed rate for a year and instant access account. They were offering this after others were closing offers/rates were tumblings. Loads of us cashed in, the website was crashing in the last days before they pulled it. Opened one for myself & the Mrs, made thousands in interest on it last year. Happy times (except for someone at Egg who must have got sacked....);)
Yes, thanks to Yorkshireboy for promoting that one :money::T

mine was average - the really high interest was because of regular savers, where you could only save up to £250 or £500 (Halifax) a month - large deposits wouldn't attract that kind of interest.

This thread is a trip down memory lane.
Don't forget, Northern Rock had queues outside it's doors and was headline news only 3 years ago.

Talking with Mrs.D., we remember that 6+% was about the going rate, as we reinvested our interest, then it meant we were growing by more than that.

    Ah, the memories.

I started on 16% with YBS (or Huddersfield & Bradford as they were known then) in February 1982. If I hadn't taken an interest only/low cost endowment mortgage I could have shaved off another 0.5 percentage points and paid 'only' 15.5%.

Seem to remember 10-12% plus pay rises at the time though, so wasn't all bad news!
