Hi Martin/Money Savers
I have just had a bit of a shock having applied for a Britannia Platinum card under the impression that they do not charge a Balance Transfer fee within the 5 month introductory period - THEY DO! I have had this confirmed this morning by two phone calls to Britannia (or Halifax which is the company supplying the card). Unfortunately I have had £2000 transferred already (asked for transfer when making application) so will be charged 3% - a whopping £60, am gutted! My advice is DO NOT APPLY FOR A BRITANNIA CARD IF YOU DON'T WANT TO PAY A FEE! Martin - you may want to look into this and remove the card from your recommendations for a 0% card that doesn't charge a balance transfer fee, because they do now!

We've just been accepted for an M&S credit card with an interest rate of 3.9% on balance transfers for the life of the balance. This means we can transfer £12500 we currently owe on a Virgin card where we are paying in excess of 17%. According to our snowball this reduces the amount of interest we'll pay back in the next 5 years from £14k to £9k. I find that incredible.
We did consider the 0% offers but with the amount owed we'd never pay it all back before the 0% ran out - this offer seemed like a far better deal.

Can anyone confirm that there was a Direct Debit payment section on the Norwich & Peterbourough Credit Card application form. I did put my bank details on the application but can't remember whether it was a DD section or other.
Just got stung with interest plus forfeit 0% free offer for missing a DD payment. Norwich are claiming it was for "proof" only for requesting bank details.
[Can't check online as they are no longer accepting applicants for this card]

I recently acquired a Chetenham & Stroud 0% visa card(CoOp Bank) in an effort to divert spending away from my overdraft which was costing £30-£40 per month in charges. however It's proving difficult to divert all spending as some firms like British gas don't accept payment by Credit Card (only debit card) are all utilities like this? Any alternative suggestions/ ( I have recently applied to move supplier to Scottish Power )
might it be worth changing my Current Account to Alliance & Leicester's 0% o/D?0 -
My daughter is struggling to repay her credit card - she owes £1600, accrued during her recent student days. She complained that despite paying off the mimimum balance each month, the debt was growing quickly. I told her about this site and balance transfers.
Having looked at Martin's suggestions, she can't go the Halifax route because that's who her debt is with. She already has a Barclaycard so that's out. I then checked his suggestion of M & S for a free fee 6 month 0% balance transfer. I couldn't find any reference to this on their web site (via the MSE link) and when I phoned up just now a nice lady in Delhi told me that they only decide what to offer you once you have applied. Does anyone have any other suggestions to help her? She has Barclays graduate account and a Halifax current account.
Thanks

Hello there
It's the first time that I post in this forum so please forgive me if I'm doing anything wrong.
I have a credit card with natwest where I owe around £850. I haven't used my card for almost a year, paid nearly every month my minimum payment and most of the times more than that. Yes, I have missed two payments along the way but put money into it every month. My debt has increased!!! I've put into it hundreds of £££ but it just doesn't go down AT ALL!!
Just the other day I paid £100 and only a bit more than £60 counted in.
I've read your article about transfering my balance to a new card so I can get 0% interest in it. I'm able to pay off my card in less than a year easily so would appreciate if someone could direct me to the best deal I can get. M&S, HSBC as Martin recommends in his article??
Any help will be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance.0 -
Hi, i'm wondering if any of you clever MSEs can help me. Bit overwhelmed by all the info. Situ as follows: Egg visa £11,500. Mint visa £3,200. Virgin MC £2,300 and cahoot flexi-loan £9,000. Scary total of £26,000. Due to losing business thru back injury and paying mortgage/living/everything with CC for 2 years. But I have £13,000 due any day and don't know where to spend it for best results.
Original plan to pay off most of credit cards and keep loan I'm not so sure about since Cahoot interest went up to 14.9% (it was 5.8% when I took it out!!!)
So what to pay? what to transfer? what order? Do I start applying for cards? Do I pay off existing before applying for new? Virgin must go - not happy with them. Egg have always been good to me so happy to keep but been with them over 8 years can i get the anniversary deal?
Credit rating 4* with call credit and Equifax but only 1* with EXPERIAN (couldn't find me on Electoral Roll). Have been up to 2 months late with payments in past but currently up to date. Main problem seemed to be no searches ie no new credit applications. Was SCARED to apply when not earning!!! so been paying £600 /month in interest for last year or more.
so HELP HELP HELP as I don't know where to start
ps I have been spreading the word of MSE - at citizens advice, in the pub, to friends and family. Just not been taking my own advice!
Here's hoping!
