Double flash from camera on opposite side of road

If someone, hypothetically of course, were driving on an empty Gloucestershire road at night 20mph over a 50mph speed limit and a camera on the opposite side of the road flashed twice as they drove towards it...could they be prosecuted? The road in question would have lines on both sides of the road.

Thanks,
Andy

It depends on what kind of camera it is.

A Truvello faces oncoming traffic so it's purpose is to prosecute drivers driving towards it.

A Gatso is used to take photos of traffic traveling away from it. In theory it could be used to prosecute drivers driving towards it but I don't believe it ever has been used in this way. But if it was I don't see that there would be any legal argument to avoid prosecution.

If its a GATSO then it will have just been a dummy flash, so don't worry. If a TRUVELO then bad luck.

No. If it is flashing from the 'wrong' side of the road, it hasn't been calibrated correctly.
  • Thanks for the replies....from a quick bit of reading it sounds like only a Gatso would flash twice....or would a Truvelo also flash twice? If they both do....other than driving back to look at the camera is there any way of checking what kind of camera it was?

My road angel didn't go off....but does for cameras on my side of the road....again making me hope it was a Gatso...

    Thanks,
    Andy
  • Gatsos are the big square grey boxes, truvelos are smaller, often blue, and have two circular lenses one above the other.

A forward facing Truvelo would also be on 'your' side of the road, not the other. So probably a Gatso- you'll be fine.
  • So, in summary, if it's a Gatso it can't get me. If it's a Truvelo, it should be on my side of the road. Could it still get me if it were a Truvelo but on the opposite side of the road?

    Still fretting...
  • If the flash was as you approached I don`t think you need to concern yourself. Truvelo flash in the invisible spectrum (so you don`t get dazzled) as you approach. Gatso flash white as you recede (once you`ve passed).
  • So what made it flash at all when I was approaching it? And why twice?... It was dark so I think I would have seen any kind of flash (isn't the Truvelo supposed to have a magenta filter?)

True, as far as I'm aware. I was flashed by a Gatso on the other side of the road in Edinburgh but never got anything. There was nothing else on the road but no idea how/why they flash oncoming traffic. They always flash twice because they take 2 pics.

I guess it could, but never seen one on the opposite side. I reckon you're alright.

You will see on some roads (with a single gatso) the white line markings on both sides of the road.

That is to catch "clever" speeders who drive fast past the gatso on the wrong side of the road.
