Does anyone have experience of growing ginger? Indulgently bought a thing (seed / root!!!) from homebase. Costly but I haven't seen them anywher else lately!
Ginger is definitely on my 'experiment' list. I did try a few years ago but must admit that completely ignored it once it was potted.
Apologies if you have already looked into this but this is one of the links I had saved about growing it0 -
I want to try ginger as well, saw it in B and Q, so I'll go back for it now that I have people to compare growth with!
I got an allotment in October so am quite excited about the forthcoming growing year!0 -
I've been reading this thred but yet to post anything in it. I've finally been able to get my growing season underway after many set backs stopping me from getting in the garden, so thought it would be a good time to say a proper hello to everyone.
I'm just wondering if anyone will be doing watermelon this year. I had a couple of £'s left of my vouches from T&M so decided to get something a bit different to try, as well as challange myself to find somewhere for them.0 -

Finally got some Seeds showing through, Beefsteak tomato, aubergine and nasturtiums so far but nothing else - I'm so impatient.:p Hoping to get up to my Allotment again on Wednesday and in between will get some more Seeds sown in the Greenhouse. Watched Gardener's World on Friday, been reading my Gardening books and just generally getting excited about the prospect of growing my own again this year but on a bigger scale now that I have the Allotment sorted. This gardening/grow your own is soooo addictive.:D"WASTE NOT, WANT NOT!"GC for OH, myself, DD18 & DD16 includes Toiletries, cleaning stuff & Food.

Finally made a start today. Inspired by Gardeners World & The Amateur Gardener programme I planted my Shallotts (Golden Gourmet) in to individual modules to give them a good head start & I did similar with onions ( Red Barron) but in half toilet rolls.
I also sowed the Pretty in Purple Chillis, Jalapenos & California Sweet Peppers in to the heated propogator. Once in to the swing of it I could have carried on with more but my son was making mud pies with my new compost & scattering it all over the decking (arghh!), thats when when he wasn't breaking me off every minute for drink, toilet, food etc so I gave up after I'd done that little lot! ha!.
I will try sort my seed tin out over the next few days, now have to move them in to a bigger tin & arrange them in to sowing sections which will help me sort in my mind what is next to be sown & hopefully I can make a start on some tomatoes this week too.0 -
Hi everyone
I made a start yesterday too. Planted out my first early spuds into patio planters. They hadn't chitted fantastically well, but hopefully they'll do ok.
I also made a start on re-potting my over-wintered chilli plants. I thought it might be an interesting MSE-style experiment to see if I could keep last year's going, rather than plant new seeds again this year, so will be interesting to see.
The dwarf broadies I sowed into toilet roll middles are looking very healthy on the window sill, but not sure what to do with them next and when? Garlic looking good too. No sign of my aubergines yet. I'm thinking I won't do toms this year, too much heartache!
My back this morning is feeling the effects of my first gardening efforts of the new season! Was lovely when the sun came out though later in the afternoon.
Have a good week everyone

I might also try the Hestia dwarf beans again as they are still in date and they didn't sprout at all last year so I see it as a challenge! They are all under a fleece tent to stop the frost battering them0
