Oh dear Sheel :'(

I'm using Sygate and haven't had any problems with it if that's any use. Wish I could help with the other stuff, I'm sure someone will.

I assume you've double-checked that all the bits are plugged in properly and there's not a loose connection?

Could your mouse be (I was going to say knackered but my son said "faulty" ;)) with all your persistent never ending use?! :) (Ie, perhaps you have more than one problem.)

    Sheel,

I'll certainly try and help with your first problem - the USB Hub and your Broadband modem.

The fault could lie with a couple of things - the Hub could be mis-behaving hence the occasional working. The problem could also be with the USB ports on your motherboard, have you tried putting another USB device (printer or scanner??) into the same Hub slot and see if your PC picks it up.

The 'device not working' fault can normally be rectified by re-installing your device drivers / making sure they are up to date. I had similar problems with my USB hub and USB slots with ny printer a while ago and I had to re-install the drivers and now I have no problem.

As for Broadband not working - you should have '2 computers' in your task bar at the bottom of your screen, next to the clock, single clicking on this icon should bring up your connection status, you should not be getting a 'pop up dialling box' if you are on BB, just a regular dial up connection.

If you want to ensure that all your devices are installed and your computer can see them, have a look in the Device Manager.

    HtH

    cheers

unplug your mouse, replug and continue, if you get the same problem again, try turning the mouse over, undo the hatch and let the ball fall out, give it a clean with soap and water, completely dry it before putting it back.

also there should be 3 wheels within the mouse, these gather dust/grease and other muck, using a nail file or cotton bud, gently clean these.

also give the inside of the mouse a blooming good blow.. to clear dust etc.

clean the pads on the bottom of the mouse, these also
    gather dust/grease.

do you have another mouse you could try?

if your mouse doesnt have a ball, the above wont help... as all of my mice have them... ;)

    the message

'Cannot access the Windows Management Instrumentation software. Windows management files may be moved or missing. '

is caused by having a firewall active.

if you disable the firewall, you should then be able to do things like enter system properties, or change the pc clock (i run kerio and have to disable it to do anything remotely clever :D)
If you havent got any firewall now, you probably have windows xp firewall switched on. whilst this is the default and means you do have something to block the nasties, i would suggest installing something else, as many people have pointed out the windows xp firewall isnt the best.

i run a adsl broadband modem via a usb hub, if the usb hub is self powered ie it takes power from the pc, then there can be a problem with that, sometimes my modem light doesnt come on or stays on orange for what seems like ever.

i simply unplug the usb cable from the back of the modem and then replug it.... hey presto it boots up

    Sheel,

It sounds like your USB Hub is a self powered Hub and probably won't come with any drivers and it might not be getting picked up by your motherboard - can you see it via the Device Manager?

If you are unsure about the drivers (if any) do a web search for the maker and model of the Hub and see if you can find any drivers that way.

As for your LAN (Local Area Network)connection, you might have made more than one connection to connect to the web with. To check righjt click on the LAN icon and select 'Open Network Connections'.

This will bring up a box that will tell you what connections you have made and their status, whether they are Enabled, Disabled Firewalled etc. Don't worry if you have more than one, as long as one is Enabled then you can get online.

    cheers

self powered mini hubs are notorious for this type of problem.

if you power on the scanner before booting up the pc, does it find it?

my hp printer/scanner does the same thing.

is the mouse connected directly to the pc or via the usb hub? ignore i have just reread your posting.

it could be your mini hub is not usb2, mine is v1.1 but the usb sockets in the pc are v2

I thought about that but I remembered that USB2.0 was meant to be backwards compatible with USB1.1

usb2 is, but i have heard of problems where a usb1.1 hub is plugged into a usb2 port, the sort of problem i am referring to is things like my hp printer/scanner pushing to much (i was going to say power, but is has a separate power supply) through the hub.

or even problems with the power supply to the motherboard causing a powers surge/blip in the usb2 on board port

having reread this it sounds wierd, but i swear this is a problem i have with my pc.

    Sheel,

Sorry I can't be of anymore help but it sounds to me like the USB drives on your Motherboard are faulty.

You could try re-installing the drivers for your devices, alternativley have you tried the System Restore for Windows XP.

Just do a windows search for 'System Restore' and pick the date of the nearest save point BEFORE you started having problems with the system.

This will not affect your documents or other material in anyway but should only be done as a last resort.

    cheers

    Sheel,

I think restore points get made if you install new programmes so worth checking.

    sheel,

just to refresh, you have now plugged the mouse/keyboard and broadband modem directly into the usb ports on your pc?

have you installed anything new recently?
when did you last do an antivirus update and then a full virus scan.
have you updated adaware? there is anew version available called se this will replace adaware 6 and the online update works properly on it.

have you updated spybot recently (new file dated 11/08)

have you updated spyblaster and spysweeper (i dont know these)

have you tried to unistall modem.
    reboot
    reinstall modem

repeat for the usb attached mouse

have you tried shutting down, opening up the case and giving it a good clean up.... you will be amazed th amount of dust that collects in there, be very careful cleaning it, a hoover will be ok, as long you dont bang things inside

    possible causes:
    overheating
    power supply fault
    usb port fault

have you tried the inbuilt windows xp trouble shooter?
smile --- it makes people wonder what you are up to.... ;)

Sheel... you got a new 'puter recently didn't you? - think i remember you saying -

Is it the same modem that was working ok on your other pc?
It's possible there's a problem between your motherboard chipset and modem. I can remember quite a few occurances of it on the Tiscali support forums.

Plus i haven't read all the thread so i could be barking up the wrong tree
