Water Meter - Stuck with it then?

I too am with south west water and my unmetered bill came in at £1000 for the year.
I really don't see why we have to fork out for the coastline but,hey thats a different story.
I had a meter installed and now pay £150 a quarter which is a bit better I suppose.New to this site so please my excuse dumbness.
I have my sealed pot and I WILL save some money this year.Aiming for £4000 -
i used to spend every working day going round peoples houses fitting water meters , (before i got a life ) , any way the customer had no say , every new home had one , and every time a house was sold it was added to the list and would then get one fitted , so like it or not , chances are you will be getting a metered supply when you move anyway .
the good thing is that you get a new working stopcock aswell ,( in the chamber where the meter is , just before the meter is a tap that you turn to off/on , half a turn ) so you can turn your supply off quite easily , no need for one indoors anymore , you can also monitor if you have a leak anywhere by observing the little wheel on the meter .
i think most of my water bill was made up of charges , the actual water is very cheapmy favourite food is spare ribs0 -

Then you can pay the £400 you save into the fund to get Ollie back;)0 -
And before anyone goes banging on about it all being fair a out paying for what you use, let me ask this: is it right that the minority on water meters should pay through the nose for water, whilst the vast majority use water as they please?
We're on a water meter through choice when the rates were £40+ a month. Now we pay £200-220 a year.
Happy days!0 -
I was paying £560 PA. on the RV for my water so i had a meter fitted.
best thing since sliced bred.
now my water bill is £120 PA £115 of that is standing charges.
I only use 2-3 lts of water per day from the main
all the other water is recycled rain water.
this is used for toilets, washing, showering washing up.
the water is stored in big tanks then filtered through a 5 micron filter then a 1 micron charcole filter then a filter that is 99.999% pure killing all germs
probably more pure than the water from the main0 -
Water company fitted a meter next door when new people moved in last year, but they said they didn't want it and so it was removed:mad: I thought meters were to be fitted now when properties change hands as a matter of course - that is the fair thing to do.Stopped smoking 27/12/2007, but could start again at any time :eek:0

It depends on the water company.
Some fit when someone new moves in and leave it, some offer the 12 month return to RV and some companies do not fit at all when someone else moves in.Sods law I am afraid with where you are living but that will stop as sooner or later then will all fit meters and refuse a revert back
You are right that it is fair if everyone was on a meter and I am sure that it will get there but that does not help those who are paying more now, I am on RV and mine is very low so I can understand both sides.There is a race of men that don't fit in; A race that can't stand still;
So they break the hearts of kith and kin, and roam the world at will.

That won't help in many areas.
All water companies can fit a meter when a house changes occupant(owner or tenant), regardless of the wishes of the new occupant - and it was always the intent of the Water privatisation regulations that this should happen.
However some companies enforce that regulation, whilst other don't. However there are signs that more and more companies are enforcing it and can do no matter how far back the house changed occupation(in the last few years.)
In the South East the main water companies are installing meters on every property over the next 5-10 years so there will no longer be the option unless you are one of the very small percentage of properties that cannot be metered.Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.0 -

It was published that is some areas where there was a shortage the companies had been authorised to fit meters even to 'sitting' tenants/owners.
I have heard that it is the intent to widen this scheme, but have seen nothing in writing. Do you have a source for that information?0 -
I would be interested too. I live in the south east and currently pay £46 a month for my water and theres is 3 of us in a 2 bed house. We used to have a bath everyday, well one of us but recently this has been cut down alot due to real life changes. My dishwasher has broken also, so we hardly use any water tbh. Do you think we should try a meter, if your saying one will be installed sooner or later should i bite the bullet and try it now? I'm always worried that if i try these things that it will end up more expensive lol0
