Water Meter - Stuck with it then?

Reading through a thread from 2007 and saw that once a meter has been fitted you can't get it removed unless you were the one who got it fitted and request removal within 12 months? Is this still the case today?

The house we hope to buy has a water meter :( I had a water meter for 13 years at a previous property and found it to be incredibly expensive despite no baths, no running the tap whilst brushing teeth, no hoses etc etc and the biggest con going imo...

So am I stuck with the damn thing then?

  • Just rang them - the old charges would have been 303.71 if based on RV, but they 'estimate' for 3 people it would be 'similar' to the RV which is a load of old tosh. At my previous address I was paying £44 per month!

£44 per month is irrelevant, how much did your water actually cost you over the year.

We are a 3 adult family and my metered water is approx. 2/3rds of what it would be on RV.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

If you move into a house with a meter then you will pay on the meter

Not sure whist you mean here - are you referring to the volumetric charges? That's neither here nor there :£44 a month in total equals a whopping £528 a year as compared to an rv water cos of just over £300. You have to understand that older houses have a low rv and it is simply not cost effective to have a meter unless you live alone or in an area or home with a high rv.

I struggled for 13 years with a meter, I didn't even let the tap run whilst I brushed my teeth...made no difference...you just couldn't get the charges down.

And before anyone goes banging on about it all being fair a out paying for what you use, let me ask this: is it right that the minority on water meters should pay through the nose for water, whilst the vast majority use water as they please?

Does the prospective new home have a wasteful combi boiler in it?
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

My local Morrison's do a similar thing with their petrol, they have a meter "thingy" on the pump - disgraceful ! How can I avoid this unfair charge ?

£44 a month sounds a lot for water. I presume that's with sewerage charge too but it's still double what I was paying with a meter for two of us. Also the assessed charge that Thames water charges when they can't fit a meter is £284 for a 3+ bed house. That seems to show that your usage is excessive for some reason. Maybe your meter wasn't working right or there was an underground leak.

Edit: Ah well, having seen the difference in the charges in the different areas, I now realise that what I pay has no bearing on what you might pay. Depends on the area.

    Dollydiva,
The majority of properties in UK are better off with a meter according to the Regulator -ofwat. Note. majority - not all. So it is not a 'con'

Obviously the two factors are the RV of your property and how much water you use if on a meter.

Despite having average consumption for 3 people, I save a load of money by having a meter.

However as all properties built in the last 20 years, and many others, have to have a meter fitted, surely it is a fair principle that we pay for what we use?

As I say, it IS fair that we pay for what we use...so why aren't we ALL on meters instead of the minority who threrfore pay thru the nose for the meagre they do use as opposed to the bloke in the next house using his hose every five mins? The only people this is UNfair to is this who have meters and don't want them!
