When I had DD and she wouldn't settle, the midwife rolled up one of her little fleece blankets and popped it underneth her knees so her legs were up a bit (mimicking my arm I suppose). Worked well with DS- DD was a nightmare though!

Swaddling worked for my DS when he was small as well - definitely worth a try, especially as it doesn't cost anything and you can try it with whatever thin sheet you have (I used a spare cot sheet, that worked fine)
  • Great suggestions ^^, I did the towel thing but with one huge towel folded and rolled under so there was a roll at each side of DS. DD was pretty happy straight away on her sheepskin, though when I put her down I held my hand on her belly until she was quiet, before I moved away. I tried this on a friend's son when he was tiny (I lent her the sheepskin as well) and it worked for him too. I think that anything to make them feel more physically secure would help, plus the parenting mantra: This too will pass!
    Good luck

DD1 hated her moses basket at first so we brought her in with us to start with. Then I was determined to get her in there as I wasn't sleeping well next to her, so I did the rolled up blankets thing, put one under the sheet around her then one under her knees, she much preferred it and slept so well. The other thing I did was get her used to it in the daytime before putting her in at night. So for a few days everytime she dropped off I put her straight in the basket so she was waking up in there a lot, then when she got used to it in the day I would settle her in there at night, but when she woke to be fed she would come in with us, slowly the time she spent in her basket became longer and longer (though she was a particularly good sleeper and went 5 hours from birth!)

Well DD2 is my revenge for having an easy sleeper first time round. She actually goes down easier than DD1 as I can put her down awake and she goes to sleep, but only slept for a maximum of 2 hours. She is 3 months now and sleeps from around 9-1 or 2, in her basket then comes in with me and then wakes up 3-4 times to be fed until we get up at 7. Problem is that despite being so tired I can't get to sleep until 10 or 11 so I only get a few hours unbroken sleep but it does get better as they get older the first year is my milestone if we get over that and I'm still not getting sleep then I will be weeping!

ETA: Both my girls slept much better in their sleeping bags. I thought they were unnecessary first time round and resisted getting them as I figured people had coped with blankets for so long etc, well DD1 started waking herself up by kicking covers over her face so I got a few of freecycle and have never looked back they are great as neither of my girls got on with being swaddled they like their arms out.
  • my DD hated having her hands tucked in so a swaddle was out of the question but she was and still is a good sleeper, DS was a completely different baby (quite a shock lol!), he needed to be wrapped up firmly in a thin brushed cotton sheet, I also raised the mattress up a bit with a folded towel. That worked well til the little chap got a bit more wiggly then we moved onto a sleeping bag.so far so good!best of luck!
  • The towel thing worked for me, swaddling didnt. It is literally a case of trying everything and baby will let you know what he likes. Also just to check if he doesnt like being laid down flat would it be worth raising the cot mattress by popping a pillow underneath - my friend does this for her little one.

    HTH

But as people keep saying....it will pass. Keep up the good work :D

try a ticking clock, worked for my brother prior to it he hardly ever slept, could be your wee one is missing hearing the rhythm of your heartbeat. good luck
  • Try swaddling. My son HATED his moses basket, refused to sleep in it AT ALL! We ended up moving him into his own room & cot at 7 days old. And he slept like a dream from then on!

  • Also he may have reflux. If he doesnt like laying flat that could possibly point at a bit of reflux. Raise the head of his moses basket a little. Also speak to your HV as she may be able to advice further.
