My son is now 6 days old and refuses to sleep in a moses basket. he wouldnt even settle in the cot in the hospital. the only places he will sleep is either in my arms or his car seat! i dont want this to go on any longer as im aware im making a rod for my own back and il never be able to get him into a cot. i was wondering if anyone has any ideas on how to get him to go to sleep in a moses basket. ive tried letting him fall asleep in my arms and then as soon as i put him down he wakes up! the longest he will sleep for is 2 hours the rest of the time is spent being really fidgety or crying. he just will not settle :(

Have you tried warming the moses basket with a hot water bottle before you transfer him from your arms to the basket (remove hot water bottle before inserting baby!).

Otherwise google Amby natures nest..... we used one of these and I would imagine the sleeping position is much more similar to your arms/car seat/womb than a moses basket, they can be used for up to a year but we just used to 6 months as an alternative to a moses basket so we could keep him in with us and observe SIDS guidelines.... couln't have fit a cot in our room.
  • No i havent tried that but it sounds like a really good idea thank you!
  • I was told to do it i put it around the mattress of the Moses basket so it was safe. It helped alot bless them its a big strange world outside of the small place he was before. xx

  • ymcas that natures nest looks amaing but wayyy out of my budget lol. i will also give the hot water bottle idea a go. thank you. its just so hard. i obvioulsy knew having a baby would mean lack of sleep but at the moment unless i put him in the car seat i get 0 hrs!!
  • i know stowmum i think thats why he likes the car seat its much more snug than a moses basket!

My baby son hated the fish tank cot in hospital, and same with the moses basket at home. I kept him by my side for a whole month, and when daddy finally kicked him out of our bed lol (daddy had to sleep elsewhere cos he's a smoker hah!) he was happy in the basket.
I think it took him that long to straighten out his back (up to this point he couldn't lie on his back, as his curved spine made him topple sideways) and then the flat of the moses basket wasn't so uncomfy. Our matress is much softer.
Don't worry, it will be okay in the end.

  • We had similar problems and (similar to previous posts) ended up rolling a few towels up and putting those around the edge of the basket so it was a much snugger. Also if we were really knackered we just put her in the car seat to stopus going mad.
  • You have to check with the new guidelines re SIDS, but I used to swaddle mine. Only thing you need is a small thin babyblanket or cotton square that you wind around them so they cannot move their arms and legs. It seemed to settle them. youtube has some videos if you need an example of how it is done.
I never realized how much personal info is out there that can be used and abused to suit every purpose.

We got ours off ebay, might be worth a look depending on how desperate you get. You could probably resell for the same price if it didn't work for you.
