Items not selling well...what listing format please?

Crowqueen - I have no intention of reporting you or anyone else. But you were definitely a business.
However, I would have no difficulty defending that case in front of HMRC.
It's why I deplore all these "let's report this" posts. And all the "this is the way it should be done" folk.

You cannot amend auctions once they are underway (you get a 30 minute window for changes actually to be accurate!)

However when you list a BIN you choose the listing times, up to 30 days in all and the fee remains the same at 40p. It also does not matter how many items are included, so you can have 20 items as long , of course as they are identical and are still only charged the 40p insertion fee. However you pay FVFs on each item sold, but only when it sells.

I think you can only do 30 day BIN listings if you have a shop... my BIN's only have 10 days as the longest timeframe and I don't have a shop.

I am a private seller and have a number of 30 day listings open right now. The default is 7 days but there is a drop down box on the first listing page to set it to 30 days.

As a general point, I always check the completed listings for the items I want to sell and I look at both sold and unsold items to glean ideas about what works and what doesn't in terms of listing format and style.

I tend to use BIN for items that I want £15 and above for, and auction items that I think will go between £5 and £15. I start the BIN listings at slightly above the average selling price for previous listings and accept 10-20% lower offers if they are made.

My sales are all things I am clearing out and best sellers are good quality clothes (Boden, White Stuff, Coast sell really well, even if they have been worn for a couple of seasons), collectable books (although this varies - sometimes the 'rare' books that I treated myself to a few years ago will have been reprinted and so become worthless), vintage crystal and china (the current 'shabby chic' craze has pushed up prices on stuff I have over-bought in past years).

If things are too bulky to post or are likely to sell for less than a fiver, then I stick them on my car boot sale pile or take them to a charity shop.

My BIN stratagy works better as ost things are media so 20p for a 30 day listing works well.

It does depend on the kind of item, mine are mostly video games and DVDs to which BIn works very well.

With that I have sold used items on BINs for more than you can go to the usual online retails and buy new, its not my problem if they don't check.

Another point to make about tripods is that theyre heavy and cost a lot to post, so p+p may bump the price up to an unacceptable level for the buyer. What was the original price of the tripod? Is it a professional one or a bog standard basic one? As a £20 tripod is never going to fetch £12 on ebay. If it's a professional model you may get a good price but it's a small target audience.

A couple of quick additional points, which I don't think have been mentioned:

There have been 2 very recent 'Free Listing Weekends' on eBay, which have flooded the marketplace with unwanted items. The chances are, unless your items are fairly unique, that you are up against an unnaturally large range of similar items to yours, with novice sellers often listing their similar items for pennies, which reduces your chances of achieving sales.

Also, what sells well one week, may not the next and vice versa. I have relisted items several times on free listing days, without a sniff of interest, only to eventually have them madly fought over between 2 or 3 bidders! There doesn't seem to be any reason or logic behind this - maybe you will be lucky next time?

Thank you for that - I've just checked and yes, the 30 day option is there! How could I have missed that before?!?
