Claims Advisory Group are not very clever

Interesting phone call from this evening, I'd like to share for your amusement. Please bear in mind that I already (foolishly) made a claim through them.

So, about 6:30pm I get a phone call, "Hello there, this is Susan (I forget her real name) from Claims Advisory Group" she said, "our records show..." - here we go, i thought, gonna ask for money I owe. they will get it on payday as agreed - "...that you may be owed £2000 in missold PPI from a loan you have had in the last 10 years"

This is where I was confused. "Sorry, could you say that again?". She repeated. "ok, could I ask where you get your information from?" asks I, with intrigue. she replied "Certainly, it's from a public database of people who have taken out credit agreements in the past 10 years"

Fair enough, i thought, but she hasn't even guessed my name yet.

"So, would you like to claim your compensation?"
"Yes, but I can manage myself thankyou. Where did you get my number by the way?"
"It's on the public consumer database, it's registered when people apply for credit" She said.
"That's strange, I havent applied for credit for 3 years, but I've only had this number for six months" I lied. Or rather bluffed!
"Oh right, the number you are calling from isn't showing on our system" "No it shouldn't, but you called me" "oh yes, so we did. Should we take your number off our records?" she sheepishly asked me. I said "yes, you better had"

What I forgot to tell her was that the very same company had already conned me into reclaiming my halifax ppi with them with the same phone call, which just shows how stupid these companies are, that their right hand doesn't even know what their left hand is up to!
Debts remaining: £0/£16000
PPI reclaimed: Halifax £2300, Welcome Finance - £2400

There is no such database. Your insurance details are private.

The lies these dodgy claims companies tell are disgraceful.

  • They all con you, or rather mislead you into thinking you need them to get your money back. Basically they don't do anything that you can't do yourself i.e. fill out a form and post it, they don't have anymore power over creditors than we do, then have the cheek to charge upto 40% of your refund plus vat for what should cost no more than a fiver. Most of them don't know what they are talking about, will lie to get your attention (told me I had £2000 waiting to be claimed, when I knew I'd already claimed all mine) and some will try to scare you into not doing it yourself, sometimes talking about court cases and solicitors and high costs. All utter rubbish.

The halifax ppi, I claimed back £2300, 800 of which cleared the loan off (was in arrears) and £900 went to pay CAG, leaving me with £500, when I could (and should) have had £1400! I didn't pay straight away as i had more pressing matters (other debts, rent etc) and that's when the hassle started.

As for your credit card, I urge you and anyone else to do it yourself, you will save a lot of money and hassle, and will achieve a great sense of accomplishment when you get your money.

I know, it's disgusting. Next time I get a call I will waste their time and play games with them

Or you may now be on a "sucker list" of people who can be scammed, so do take care if you get unexpected phone calls from any financial services company, whether it's reclaiming, injury claims or share selling.

Thank's for the advice, but lessons have been learned here. I will never use a claims company again, I will never use a company who contacts me first, and I will always, ALWAYS search the internet for references and advice before using any type of financial service

Your details are sold on sites like this one mostly.... how do they get away with it? Is this legal at all?

its certainly a data protection breach. Theft of data is most likely.

Ex staff selling the data to these people which is then bought by dodgy companies to market from.

  • Lets be totally honest - if you were all so clever and it is so simple and not worth paying such companies then you would have done it yourself in the first place. Some people of very quick to be outraged when the work has been carried out, yet do not mention a thing when these services are being offered and the work in being carried out.
Simple fact is, when you use facilities to apply for credit, whether that be a loan in a bank or online, or a store card in a shop, if you do not select for your details not to passed to a third party then companies are legally free to sell your details on. If your not happy with such companies acting on your behalf to reclaim your finances that your too lazy to obtain yourself, then you shouldnt complain when they do what you asked them to do.
Selling tools such as 'you could reclaim £2,000' is the same as Adidas trying to say you can play like David Beckham if you buy their football boots.....you may, you may not.
In terms of Claims Advisory Group, my research has shown that they actually charge less then most PPI companies as vat is inclusive in their fees were others are not - Claims Advisory Group 39%inc. other are 25% plus vat (45%).

The details they pass on do not include specific details about the product you bought etc.

I suggest you do your calculations again. You are wrong.

39% inclusive of VAT is more than 25% plus VAT.
