Car ownership proof dilemma
Options
Comments

V5 is not proof of ownership - her dad owns it and has every legal right to it.0
-
Everyone always says the V5 is not proof of ownership, but it's a good start, as there is no other document available, especially if it was given to her.
However possesion is what counts.
Her name is on the V5, it was a gift, just go round and drive it away.0 -
This should actually be in the family and relationships forum as going around and driving the car away will lead to a family dispute.
Your gf needs to think of another option to get the car back which won't cause a family rift.I'm not cynical I'm realistic
(If a link I give opens pop ups I won't know I don't use windows)0 -
I think if her dad has took the car back, and making her walk, or catch the bus as he doesn't like her boyfriend, the rift may already have a great lake in it as well.0
-
Emotions aside who bought and paid for the car..there will be a paper trail!0
-
There won't be a paper trail if it was bought as a present, my kids never get me to sign over anything, they usually just snatch my arm off with it.0

What absolute rubbish!
Where is your evidence to give such a definitive reply?
To OP,
Yes she has a very good claim to the car. After all negotiations have broken down, if you have a spare key and it is available to be taken, just go and take it. If that fails then she can claim its value in the small claims court (how much is the car worth?)
But if it were me I would be tempted to just sign the car over to him and never speak to him again.0 -

Everyone always quotes that as well.
Doesn't prove you don't own it either, and you'd be hard pushed to prove the person named on the V5 stole it back from her dad.
(now if it was on finance, and the finance company had sent the bailiffs round, then there would be a case for the owners not being the registered keepers, but not in a domestic dispute)0 -
