Eating Out in Scotland

Following a suggestion on the Travel Board for an Eating Out thread I thought it might be best split on the Nations Boards, so here we go looking for suggestions and recommendations for Eating Out in Scotland.

I'm from N. Ireland so I hope you don't mind me butting in but I just had to recommend:

The Ubiquitos Chip - Traditional Scottish Food - expensive but wonderful
Ho Wong Chinese Restaurant - excellent seafood dishes
Arigo Centro - Italian Food - good food and atmosphere

These are all in Glasgow and I went to them based on the recommendations in a book called Edinburgh & Glasgow Eating and Drinking Guide. Other major cities could do with publishing guides as informative and unbiased as this.

Oh! and the Willow tearooms (Glasgow) are a must for a huge variety of tea blends and lovely lunches and pastries. They just happen to be decorated Mackintosh Style too.

Can you tell I love Glasgow

  • Sure I'll think of some more but a couple spring to mind...

Corrieri's Cafe (Alloa Road, Stirling): Authentic Italian pizza, pasta and ice-cream (yum!)
Tolbooth Restaurant (Jail Wynd, Stirling): Fab modern, Scottish cuisine - a la carte and pre-theatre menus (this is an arts venue). An added bonus it that it is owned by Stirling Council which has a no-smoking policy on all it's buildings so you don't come out stinking like an ash tray. :D

Edited to say that the Tolbooth has changed hands and is now a very expensive Italian (which I haven't tried). Boo! :(
If I hadn't seen such riches, I could live with being poor...

Carrying on with the Stirling places to go.

Papa Joes - An excellant Mexican/Steak House, everthing about this place is superb from the nacho starters to delightful fillet steaks, not to mention the oreo cookie pie dessert. A good 3 course meal for two including fillets steaks each and a half decent bottle of wine will set you back around £55-£60

  • Pacos, Mill Street, Perth is excellent for lunch and dinner. Menu is extensive and something to suit everyone pizza, pasta, Mexican, steaks.

Roos Leap, Traill Drive, Montrose is an Australian themed restaurant. The choice and quality of food is excellent, and the portions are extremely generous. It is extremely popular, so booking recommended. It is very popular with families with young children on Sunday afternoons/tea-time, so if you don't fall into this category, suggest you have a later dinner! (Think children have to be out by 8 p.m.) All diners get a free drumstick lollipop, and children all get a free helium balloon!

Spice, Erskine Lane, Broughty Ferry, Dundee is an Indian Designer Restaurant, according to its blurb. Never mind that, the food is excellent, although possibly a little pricier than some other Indian restaurants in the area. They do a deal on Sunday tea-times for families, so it can be quite noisy then. Good if you have children, but if it's an intimate meal, just the place to go, but later in the evening!

John Carrigan's Eating House in Hamilton is renowned for the quality, quantity and very reasonable prices of its dishes.

The Waterside in Strathaven has great freshly cooked meals - there is an early evening menu which is great value for 2 - 3 courses.
  • My suggestion has to be Lets Eat in Perth, it truly is the best restaurant I have been in anywhere in the world. And, it's up for sale if anybody is interested, seeing as how my cooking skills stop at cheese on toast I'll not be making a bid

I'm sorry to say that I have eaten there and it was the worst Indian meal I have eaten in a restaurant. It was completely bland and tasteless and I was very disappointed. Perhaps I just got it on a bad night.
Old Faithful we roam the range together,
Old Faithful in any kind of weather,
When the round up days are over,
And the Boulevard’s white with clover,
For you old faithful pal of mine.
Giddy up old fella cos the moon is yellow tonight,
Giddy up old fella cos the moon is mellow and bright,
There’s a coyote crying at the moon above,
Carry me back to the one I love,
And you old faithful pal of mine.
  • The Howgate Inn just outside of Edinburgh is really lovely. You can either go into their restaurant (bit more formal if a special occasion) or, my preference, the bistro with open fire, big wooden chairs and fantastic attentive staff. Great atmosphere. Been there with grandad, with my wee ones and with a male friend and every time the food and service has been terrific. They even look like they recognise you, surely impossible in a busy eatery! I can't recommend this place enough - oh and the prices are reasonable too.

This has lovely meals but is full of smoke ! This really lets it down as you always come out stinking of smoke - if they banned smoking in their restaurant it would be brilliant but until they do Im giving them a huge body swerve. My boyfriend smokes ( but never at meals) and even he wont go there.Such a shame.
