why do people buy new build homes?

Why do people like buying new build homes Ie those built in the last 15 years.

The inside walls are hollow, (not made out of bricks), gives the place a tacky feel. the quality of the work can be shoddy

The rooms are smaller
the quality of the kitchen/ bathroom is poor
their is no character or greenery on the roads,
developers try to squeeze as many homes in as possible
parking can be a problem

surely it would be better to buy a older more spacious house for the same money and then re decorate it completely your self. For the same money.

so why are new homes so popular? (apart from being more energy efficient)

  • Not all new-builds are the same. I suspect for a lot of people the idea that a new-build will be low maintenance, at least for the first few years, is an attractive prospect, especially for those who are stretching their borrowing to the limit. Friends of mine bought a detached new-build and it was lovely and spacious even though the garden was very small.

    usually energy efficient
    downstairs cloakrooms
    low maintenance
small gardens (lots of people don't want to look after a garden)
    gifted deposits
  • Each to their own. In my village there used to be many small houses with large gardens but now they have been knocked down and 5 largish houses put in their place. These houses tend to have 1/2 the plot for the house leaving a small garden; I don't get why people would want to live in the countryside with such amount of garden but seems they do. So now the village has a rather dense feel to it but I suppose that's better than the village spreading out into the surrounding fields - though now people are trying to build on the green belt.
  • What is a gifted deposit if you don't mind me asking??

I ask myself the opposite question, why would someone want to buy an old house?
  • I muh prefer the idea of living in a house where people have lived for ages. Feels like a gentle continuation of time.
...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.

Although due to the fact that most new builds are over priced by the developers not many mortgage companies will accept their 5% deposits anymore...
  • Hmm, deposit paid for me sounds awesome :-)
I like the idea of a new build becuase it means I know what is going on with the house from day 1, no sneaky half-broken boilers or whatever left over, or rotten wood etc..

"Why do people buy new builds?"

Because they suit their needs and budget possibly.
