lil miss, if you were not an existing customer it wont matter if some things were done 'later', as long as they were done.

As an existing customer, like mary, I asked to see the account onscreen before I left the branch. Lloyds do seem to have the best 'realtime banking' system out there

I opened a HSBC regular saver today @ 8% and was told that they rarely set these up for customers  Something wrong with it I am missing?

My only suggestion is that it is a lot of hassle for your average customer and us canny types wouldn't have a current account with HSBC (unless you paid us, on which front the other banks do a much better job! £50 here, a £2k 0% OD there, interest on cheques etc).

Some have been able to get one without having to pay their salary into a poor current account but after you have exhausted the list of better accounts out there, few are dedicated enough or have enough funds to fuel this account

Well I got a football when it was Midland at school, then £25 when I went to college, then £50 when I went to university, and a £1.5k 0% OD. The OD is declining now I am graduated, but it's still good enough ;-)

I do suppose eventually I will move my current account to a better company, one that can at least set up my account for tax as asked. (When I spoke to the nice Indian chap about checking my accounts were setup for Tax on interest, he assured me they had to do this by post, I then received a big pack of information about overdraft interest rates).
