handyman123 wrote: »Hi Tix, no easy way to remove wallpaper. Score well and use a steamer, Wicks do a good one for @ £20.00 it's cheaper than hiring and you can always sell it on afterwards. Steam well then a good sharp long reach scraper. I have one with replaceable blades, just watch out that you don't dig into the plaster. Lots of elbow grease required.:)
It's worth it in the end to get a good finish. I am guessing with 6 layers it's an old house so the plaster may not be perfect. If this is the case then rather than re-plaster, you may want to put a lining paper on before new wall paper. More info if needed.
Glad you asked now,:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl: Exactly what I always manage to do! Only the kitchen paper to remove now and I have a funny feeling the walls will be awful underneath - you can see the lumpiness throught the paper - and it's kinda cushioned paper! But it'll be staying put for a while yet! That signature of mine isn't quite where I'd like it to be yet!
Sorry I've been awol. I haven't caught up so I hope you are all well. I've been stressing about my postgrad course and have taken the decision to quit. I haven't managed to speak to the professor yet though to suss out my options, so not yet told my boss. I'm hoping there's a way I can do it without having to pay money back to the grant bodies, but if not, I'll just have to pay it back! I just cannot do a psotgrad on top of a full time job and a second job with no allocated study time in work. Which should have been obvious to me before now :rotfl:. But I applied for the course almost two years ago now and was deferred for a year when I was off sick, so it's obviously taken a while for the message to get to me!
Oops, sorry, didn't mean to tumble all that out here!Obvioulsy I've missed you guys and have a lot to say! :rotfl:

Only good news is low walls/ceiling.
Hi Tix When I get the chance I will post up a photo of the room I have been painting, its the size of the upstairs of a normal semi. The Ceilings are sloped going up to a height of 16 feet. It should have been a scaffolding job. I have one of these 4 way ladders and an 8 foot pole for my roller. Trouble is Lady Hooray wants no dust of divots in the ankle deep £30 per sq metre WHITE carpet. All the local tradesmen back heeled the job as they can't stand the hassle.:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:
Still it keeps me employed when it's too cold to work outside. Next week I go back to painting Junk ( Antique Furniture). As to the house you are working on, could it be one of Mrs Handy's old houses. In 5 years she has had me redecorate the Kitchen and Lounge 6 times, she says it's ready for a freshen up again:eek:
I'm not a painter and decorator by trade, just I've had a lot of practice.:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

Nicca, is there no way you can manage to fit this course in, could you not manage without the second Job? I know that things in the job market are dire and getting worse, but surely the better qualified you are the better chance of long term well paid employment. Would the earnings from the second job be lost paying back the grants.
Don't do anything hasty until you have crunched all the numbers and measured all the angles.
As usual if there's owt we can do to help?

Hi all,
Handy - another request for painting here if you get bored. Any tips on wallpaper removal (about 6 layers we think - its a friend's house).
Hi Tixy
A weak solution of washing up liquid works as well, leave it to soak into the layers of paper and it seems to loosen the glue. We did that when we moved in here - 5 layers of paper to remove:eek::eek:. Lots of elbow grease still required though. The plaster here isn't brilliant (60's house) so we didn't really want to use a steamer.
Good luckThe time you enjoy wasting is not wasted time

nicca, that would be such a shame.... can you defer it for a year, maybe your financial position will be better than and you can give up (or reduce) the second job?
You haven't long been back at work, you might feel differently about everything next year when you're fully back in the routine.
Handy's right, don't do anything too hasty without considering all your options.
take care x
Handy, can we have some photos on here as well, we need cheering up here .
Hope you're OK xThe time you enjoy wasting is not wasted time

A Good Morning to All, I hope it's warmer where you are. I need to go up to the old log pile in the woods this morning and cut some more logs. We used up the last of the logs yesterday and our local supplier has run out of logs due to demand being so high.
Real fires are great providing you have something to burn, At the moment I am relying on a fan heater to warm the whole cottage
At least I will get warm while splitting the logs, Axe, Sledge Hammer and Metal Wedge required. Let's hope spring comes early.

and watch the ferry to shetland every night
) and a few others half of which have already been deleted cos they don't work
) downloading apps LOL
