Not quite true - the Final Value Fees are cheaper, and business sellers are also eligible for further discounts from the PS/TRS scheme.

Overall it is cheaper to be a business seller.

Only if you make it to TRS i'm afraid. I was still being charged the same as my private account until i became a TRS. A 20% discount at TRS status or 100 free listings? If your just decluttering your not going to make it to TRS anyway. So which is cheaper?

Given how easy it is now to become a power seller (only 100 sales in the last 12 months), that is a still a 5% discount that private sellers can not earn, coupled with private sellers paying a flat 10% on all FVF, but business sellers enjoy 8.75% on items up to £29.99, then 5.25% up to £600. The bulk of fees are at the back end of sales, so it does not take too many sales to negate the 10p insertion fees on sub 99p items.

  • Pragmatically, that seems the only way around it - thank you for the tip.

I'm amazed eBay concludes that de-cluttering means a seller becomes a business?

Only if you use a different name and address though, otherwise they will just link your new account to the old one and block that as well, apparently.

What did people do before there were any free listings for private seller (18 months ago)? Ah yes I remember now they paid them and listed things that might actually sell and have a chance of covering costs instead of listing any rubbish from under the stairs or the shed.

For a looooooong time they also stopped doing Free Listing Days - it was Free Gallery day or Free Subtitle or Free whatever.

I started listing on an FLD in 2004 and then didn't see a proper one again until last year.

Now there's an FLD every other weekend...

It really seems that ebay are concentrating on clothes selller at the moment, I am aware of several business sellers falsely operating private accounts with a huge turnover who have not been asked to upgrade...yet, but they don't sell clothes.

Oh, and just one tip for the person who contacted me this morning. If you are going to pretend to be a private seller don't use the same account to buy those same goods the week before. It rather gives the game away!

I must say a few times I have bought a game on ebay and then when bored of it a few months later I have sold it again on ebay, as it is I am patient and buy on auction and then sell again with buy it now to the impatient which can lead to a small profit after ebay fees, would they class this as trading? Last one was £1.38 profit for having a game 10 weeks.

With ebay who knows what criteria they use. However it always pays to seperate buying and selling accounts anyway as a matter of routine.

The system may actually be working. For every one of these kind of threads opened on the official Community boards (now Seller Central), there's about five or ten people who post indignantly to the thread saying they've been contacted too, with everyone looking at their account saying, yup, you ARE a business, go and register.

Percy - I think you still seem to be allowed to have a library of games, DVDs and CDs for private sale without issues. The problem with clothes sellers tends to be a range of sizes (family wardrobe clearout or yo-yo diets do happen) or a lot of BNWT items that the seller bought in one size but never got to wear. With a book-etc seller, it may be harder to judge whether they are a collection or not; at least I don't see too many book-sellers targetted; maybe Soo knows different.
