Training whilst unemployed.

I was made redundant in february..and due too illness my doctor has signed me off since, however things are looking up and intend too search for work end of October when current sick note runs out.

With this in mind for the last 8/10 weeks Ive been too jobcentre too ask for funding too attend a Level 3 computer technicians course as id like too take a different path when going back into work.

So was referd too local trust (they make you attend after six months but i attended early voluntarily) who i was told help with said courses and funds...soon as i asked they said they could possibly help with ""£50 for a new suit"" but only if i had a confirmed interview.

Was then told they had zero funds available towards training (bit pointless people attending really)...they put me in touch with a couple of other organisations but they said the same thing....no money and no chance of things changing.

I was an area supervisor for a Security firm before redundancy but having gone bankrupt beginning of this month theres not a cat in hells chance of getting back into what i was doing previously.

So question is...where can i get a small grant/help with training costs other than Jobcentre who don't have any money.

Course is through Local College and costs about £300.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

  • ask the college if tey have any grants available- i am currently doing an ECDL course, fully paid via govt funding (college called it 'breakthrough' ?) as long term unemployed..
Long time away from MSE, been dealing real life stuff..
Sometimes seen lurking on the compers forum :-)

Should have said on initial post ive asked three colleges that are local (within 25 miles) about discretionary fund..and two other funds (was told names but cant remember now) and all three said Nope..

    Only option was too pay..

I did mention the ECDL as it would be a start...still nothing.:(
  • The taxpayer only provides training for unemployed people at a very basic level - literacy, numeracy, maybe ECDL. None of these will get you a job, but might help you become more employable if your level of education is very poor.

The reasoning is simple. If you have 3 million unemployed and 1 million job vacancies then it is clear that 2 million will remain unemployed. Providing training to help one individual get a job prevents someone else getting that same job so the taxpayer is no better off overall as the level of benefits being paid is the same. (The taxpayer is actually slightly worse off as they had to pay for the training).

Everyone in the UK has had 10+ years of free schooling paid for by the state, those who did not make the most of it at the time and now wish to top up their achievements should be encouraged to do so, but I don't see why the taxpayer should pay for it a second time around.

Actually you know what...sod it im going too put my feet and claim all the benefits i can,why should i even bother too try and get off the benefits system.

As you point out why should the tax payer (of which ive paid huge amounts...well you would wouldn't you working in excess of 300 hours a month). pay fro me too re-train...much better too cost far more and live on benefits which the tax payer pays.

So a £300 training course isnt viable...yet £800 a month plus £500 mortgage all being paid by the state is.?

Im better off unemployed than i was when working...yet i still want too get back into work, silly me much better too screw the benefits instead.:rotfl:

With the government cut backs funding for training has been cut back, so all i could say is just keep trying. I have been told that if you got a job offer that requires lets say a FLT certificate then they would fund that, but only if you had the offer of the job.
  • OP - whilst you are waiting, just to improve your English....

    "Two"
is always a number - the number 2
For example: The two boys shivered in the cold.

"Too" can be used in 2 ways:
to mean "excessively" e.g. too far, too expensive
to mean "also" or "as well" e.g. Will you be skating too?

"To" is used in 2 ways:
to show direction e.g. He passed the ball to his brother
as part of a verb e.g. He wanted to read the new Harry Potter book.

See if you can choose the correct words to fill the gaps in the following sentences.

    1. There were ......... trains standing in the station.
    two too to
    2. I usually go ........ the swimming pool on Saturdays.
    two too to
    3. The question was ........ hard for me.
    two too to
. 4. My best subject is Geography but I'm quite good at English ........ .
    two too to
    5. Maisie tries ........ train at least four times a week.
    two too to
    6. The music was far ........ loud for Joe's parents.
    two too to
    7. Twice ........ is four.
    two too to
    8. Jack's ambition is ........ become an actor.
    two too to
    9. ........ heads are better than one!

    10. "I'd like a cookie please," said Emma. "Me ........ !" shouted Mick.
    two too to
    11. I wouldn't bother ........ much about what to wear at the party.
    two too to
    12. "Remember ........ bring a change of clothes in case we get wet.

If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.
  • Sorry - I'm not being pedantic; but if you are filling in application forms; it really pays to get the basics right.

Mind you im really excited about having too live in a hostel when were repossessed as there's no housing available...still im sure my 3 yr old twins will relish it and love playing with the needles and fag butts in the social area....hmmm oh im so lucky.

    .

When you're repossessed you can rent privately and claim LHA and CTB. There's no reason for your family to have to move into temporary hostel accommodation.

But why should that get in the way of a good rant eh....?
Metranil dreams of becoming a neon,
You don't even take him seriously,
How am I going to get to heaven?,
When I'm just balanced so precariously..

    Ummm privately rented..with who exactly.?

Obviously you know the restrictions on bankrupts...you"ll know that as were living on benefits we have no money.

You"ll also know that we cannot be lent the necessary funds due too the bankruptcy.

So with all of your knowledge of bankruptcy and our situation can you please give me a list of agents who will rent us a property.:T

    What a !!!! you are...:rotfl:

Oh and regards the spelling...id suggest taking that up with Google spell checker.;)
