I'd like not to buy decs, we have a fake tree somewhere safe lol and I'd like it to look nice for nothing! or as near as damnit

Thinking of maybe sewing some decs out of fabric scraps which I have tons of. probably heart shaped, stuffed a little

will post pics when I get some done, but would love to know what you're all doing for a cheapy xmassy feeling and also suggestions welcome for stopping this looking really naff!

    Cheers all

I`m going to follow this thread .
  • My DD has made gingerbread men and hearts and I've bought some gingham ribbon to hang them on the tree.
She did it last year but the mix was too soft and gradually day by day they dropped off, much to the dogs delight because she ate them all!!
This year she added alot more flour than the recipe said to make the mixture stiffer.
  • We bring in branches of holly, ivy, mistletoe and anythign else we can find into the house. DH and DD make these into wreaths with some festive ribbon. They also put them above pictures, and even hang from light fittings :j A few years ago we made a table centre from Blue Peter :D Clay plant pot, big candle in the centre, surrounded by lots of greenery - very effective. Nothing goes up until a day or 2 before Christmas day, though ;)

Please be sure to post pictures :T

There are lots more ideas for you in this thread; I'll merge this one later.

I have found a pattern to crochet chains of hearts so have made a couple of these. I will also be collecting some of my cones from outside (leaving in the shed for a bit to dry and let any bugs escape) and then spraying them. I have a simple plug in cone thing as it is only me I do not make a lot of fuss but I have lots of nice candles so might make a display of those too..

Will post pics of crochet garland later..

In past years I've used pine cones by putting them in a sealed bag with some Christmas pot pourri referesher, put them in the airing cpuboard for a week or so and they soak up the scent, take them out just beofre Christmas and them pop in a bowl, also when we had a fireplace I wound fairy lights around a garland (not homemade) and then sprayed the pine cones and placed them along the garland in various places. Have also made mini felt stockings for the Christmas tree, red felt with white felt trim, white loop made by finger knitting and them stitched names on the front, they were just big enough to hold a funsize bar of chocolate.

One year I carefully hand-stitched a load of felt decorations for the tree - a sandwich of two layers of felt with a bit of foam in the middle and gold braid all round the edge and forming a loop at the top. Took ages to do, but they look lovely and they're still going strong :-)

My one mistake was making some green tree shaped ones with little beads on because they look gorgeous in my hand, but the green just disappears into the tree once you hang them up.

What about putting them elsewhere in the house? Perhaps sew them on to a ribbon for a sort of christmas tree bunting?

I'm thinking about this too. I've made salt dough gingerbread men and painted them to look like gingerbread...thinking about the dog...my dogs still have eating some of the salt dough ones though:mad: And I'm thinking of making very simple white paper loop chains, like at school?

I have a window that faces a road and would like something simple to put in it to cheer up the road...because its very cold out there it would be a great place for a little tree. But the cheapest local pot grown ones are about £20 for a2 foot tall tree, ranging up to £40!!!!! for a beautiful but tiny blue spruce. Quite frankly its not going to happen at that price.

Tea lights in jam jars look lovely, especially if you have jam jars that are patterned not just straight sides.
