i didnt plan to make them this year
it just sorta happened, as these things tend to:rotfl:

have fallen into a gingerbread man/woman theme too
so i shall make hearts etc to compliment these

and i made this from the bag the free tree came in (from the toilet paper people)

i have made several more but havent taken pics yet as the light has been so poor here
i have also made my christmas eve (hamper) sacks with gingerbread peeps on too for our 3

I'm very impressed Midnightraven3. They are absolutely fabulous!

I have made a few decorations in the past and so have my kids. When i get the tree out in a couple of weeks I shall be delighted to greet these decorations which are now 'old friends'...some might not be particulalry attractive to anyone else, but to me, the decorations my children made at school and home, bring back lovely memories.

One of the easiest ways of making decorations is using scraps of felt...i cut out stocking shapes and Christmas tree shapes, 2 of each to make one decoration. Sew the two sides together around the edges...leave a space big enough to stuff the decoraton with a little foam/bubble wrap/old tights or whatever..then stuff the felt and sew up the rest, sewing on a loop or thread so that it can be hung on the tree or wherever. Years ago i made felt tree decorations and sewed on the names of my children in gold thread :)

I have a window that faces a road and would like something simple to put in it to cheer up the road...because its very cold out there it would be a great place for a little tree. But the cheapest local pot grown ones are about £20 for a2 foot tall tree, ranging up to £40!!!!! for a beautiful but tiny blue spruce. Quite frankly its not going to happen at that price.

What about a tree branch, in a pot, lightly sprayed white, silver or gold with some "white lights" and minimal decorations? Saw a pic of one in Homes and Gardens once, though can't find one now and it looked lovely and still qiute natural, depending how you dress it.

This would be my perfect Xmas tree if I didn't have traditionalist DD still at home!

Lovely, clean, light, minimal and natural!!
  • paper chains, aaaaaaaah

they give me a warm & fuzzy feeling
always made paper chains when i was young

my mother wouldnt have them in the house as they didnt "go":(

my gran would allow me to hang them wherever i wanted in her house!:D

they have to be the "must have" homemade decoration

and apparently poundland have packs of felt in different colours

Thanks for the salt dough linky esmy.

Can anyone advise me on what the best paint is for use on the salt dough?

I have to buy some as I have none, other than glass paint and that is a too transparent. I want a nice shiny finish on them and I want them to last as I plan on making some as gifts.. will I need to varnish them?

Do you make the holes to thread the ribbon through before baking/drying them?

Sorry lots of questions but I am feeling inspired.

I would buy some decent thick paint, perhaps poster paint from The Works and then varnish after.
Yes, poke a hole into the dough before you bake it.

Midnightraven - love your gingerbread men (and women ;))

Apologies to those of you who saw this effort on Flyingpigs Xmas crafting thread but here's my twig star I made the other day

5206793238_a5f37a90a2_m.jpg Bit rustic but I quite like it :o
