I've made bunting from some scraps of Christmassy fabric I've had in the Christmas craft box for years, with red piping cord (also in box for years) along the top. I just cut out the pennant shapes with pinking shears and machined a casing along the top, then threaded them on the cord.

In previous years I've cut a big five foot tree shape out of coloured paper, added a half cylinder of cardboard (trunk) and cereal box pot and pinned the whole thing up on a convenient wall. The kids then spent the weeks before Christmas decorating it with tiny drawings, little paper chains, pictures cut out of magazines, miniature paper snowflakes etc. It looked great and gave them a project all of their own.

  • I am having an all natural Christmas tree this year apart from the artificial tree which is black and shows off the decorations quite well.

I saved the poppy seed heads from the garden ( seeds already saved for cooking) and painted them red then overpainted with gold - these make small but exquisite tree decorations.

Teasle heads from roadside have been given a similar treatment. I have painted them roughly with red and then sprayed with silver from poundland, I think they would look very good painted blue or purple underneath too. These have been hung with very thin red and white gingham ribbon 20p per 3m bundle from local craft and fabric shop.

Pine cones have had edges painted gold and topped with a twist of shimmery transparent bugandy ribbon and thin wire and a gold drawing pin.

orange slices dried in airing cupboard,

I have a bowl of rose heads saved over the years from bouquets. some have faded so these have been sprayed silver an encased in black net strips (approx 50p for half a metre) and tied with very thin red ribbon. A bit goth like but rather attractive on the black tree.

Finally I have quite a lot of orange clove pomanders made over several years which are decorated with medieval style ribbon. they are rather mummified but still retain some scent,

    That is the tree.

I have also made a wreath like garland to go round a mirror. I made this from clematis and hops twine twisted round and bound together with more twine. I will wind ivy round this with a few sprigs of fir a bit nearer Christmas and decorate with orange slices and berries
  • Speaking of decos, has anyone heard of having a living christmas tree?

A friend of our started a business - it's very eco friendly. You 'adopt' a tree. The business delivers a live tree planted in a pot with it's own built in watering system. You take a few precautions, and they advise using LED lights. In the new year they come and collect it for you and look after it until the next christmas. We're in Ireland - I was just curious if this has caught on in UK?
No buying unnecessary toiletries 2014. Epiphany on 4/4/14 - went into shop to buy 2 items, walked out with 17!

i'm still making my felt dec's for the tree. i don't seem to have the time at mo. once kids in bed ( 7pm ish) all i want to do is snuggle with hubby on the sofa cuddling under a blanket. i will get round to doing some more. but at the mo just being together is a bit more appealing. ( i'm a right soppy mare, lol)
  • Hi.

Firstly I love the decorations that have been posted so far...the felt decs are so cute (I think that may be next on my list of things to stash until inspiration hits)

My brilliant OH has let me decorate our tree with a Nightmare Before Christmas theme, so I had the chance to dig out my Jack Skellington baubles, and christmas Zero so decided to share. Sorry for the amount of pics

The tree isn't quite finished, I have some mini Zero's to finish crocheting, and hopefully get Lock, Shock and barrel made before Christmas, but I'm drowning under a number of knitting projects for presents, and they have to take priority right now!

At the weekend I saw some cute Reindeer and santas made of tweed. would have loved them but not this year (they ranged from £3.50 to £6 each). I'm going to consider it if I come across an item made of appropriate tweed in a charity shop though.

DS and I collected some lovely natural bits on Sunday afternoon. My mum also let us cut a few lengths off one of her bare bushes in the garden and I think we are going to make stars and snowflakes out of these to spray either silver or gold. DS also round some lovely shaped 'plants' at the side of the road (some of which will require drying first) so we collected them aswell and will spray them when they are ready.
