When I spoke to them for the last time they said to take the rest of the week off and that they would contact me. After not hearing back from them in that week I decided to try contacting them myself this week and my calls/texts have been ignored hence why I am seeking advice. I have not been down to the shop because as I mentioned, normally it is only the person who is working in the shop who is in there. The manager tends to come in during the day to do paperwork. I work full time during the day so it is not possible for me to get down there.

You have told us for the 4th or 5th time "they said to take the rest of the week off and that they would contact me". But you still ahve not told us after 3 or 4 times of asking from me alone what happened when "I decided to try contacting them myself this week and my calls/texts have been ignored". That is OK, you don't have to tell us if it is your special secret [now I AM getting sarcastic]

No because the manager told me that I should take the week off and that she would contact me next so I didn't try making contact until last week after not hearing back from her as she said she would.

The manager only tends to be during the day to do paper work, the rest of the time it is just whoever is covering working at the shop that is in. So whilst I was ill I couldn't get up there and because I work full time during the day I went back to work last week so can't get up there.

Is it worth contacting Job Centre Plus who I got the details of the job from and asking could they contact them on my behalf or CAB?
No, don't bother. If you won't give us answers then I fear you are just going to waste the time of these people.

I feel the knife going in and twisting... Are you sure that the newsagent is not taking the easy option to get rid of you because you don't take any notice?

  • I 'think' the sequence of events are as follows:

    1) Two weeks ago OP phoned in sick and was told to take rest of week off; newsagent would contact her with details of shifts

    2) One week ago (last week?) no contact from newsagent so OP rang manager and either message not passed on or texts / phone call to manager's mobile not be responded to .

does beg the question why the oP hasn't visited said newsagent though.

To be fair, I think they have explained that they can't easily get there during the day because they work full-time, and the manager is only there during the day.

However, phoning the shop landline - during the lunch-hour from the day job if necessary - would be the next semi-obvious step, because you would then either get to speak to the manager, or be able to leave a message, or find out when they were next expected in.

If your services are not required any more, you can at least ask when you can expect to receive the wages you are entitled to.

phone up, ask whoever is in at the time when the manager is in, then go in at that time....job done surely?

Tis obvious, no? At least then the OP would get a straight answer.
