Not sure what to do

Any advice on what I can do please.

I started working part time for extra money to help with my finances in a newsagents.

Was there for about 4 weeks when I had to ring in sick and was off for a week - they said it was fine and that they would contact me soon but I have heard nothing since.

I tried contacting them this week but my phone calls were ignored and my texts have been ignored.

I realise me taking time off might have not gone down well but I am more concerned that the hours I have done I won't get paid for if they say they don't want me back.

The thing is it's not a place that pays by BACS - it's paid cash in hand. So I'm concerned they are trying to get rid of me and not pay me either.

I do not want any confrontation with them however, I would certainly like to know where I stand and obviously I want to be paid for what I've done.

Any advice on how to deal with this situation?

  • What do you mean, your phone calls were ignored? You spoke to them and got nowhere, they didn't answer the phone or what? It makes adifference

What also makes a difference is "cash in hand". Are you saying that you took cash payment on a job that wasn't declared (no tax and NI)? Because if so, how can you prove that you worked there?

When I rang them 2 weeks ago to say I was sick they said it was fine, so I was off that week and then this week has gone by too and I haven't heard back from them after trying to contact to say when I'm next supposed to be working

I haven't been paid as of yet that's the problem... I filled out an application form that they gave me and also a P46 so I think it is all declared and legit but obviously it doesn't have a HR department or that with it being just a small independent shop

Have you tried going in and speaking to them in person?
If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands

It is like drawing blood from a stone. So what was said in that conversation?

The manager isn't always there though - it's normally just whoever is working at the time. I'm gonna call the actual shop rather than the manager's mobile and quiz whoever's working what's going on and leave a message asking them to get the manager to call me

I appreciate you taking time to try and help me but I'm not really doing too well at the moment and that's without you being sarcastic.

There hasn't been any conversation since I spoke to them initially to let them know I was ill and couldn't make it into work. It was then I heard from them lastly to say that that was fine and they would contact me to let me know of when I was next due in work. That was over 2 weeks ago, my calls and texts this week have been ignored and so, I'm at a loss as to whether or not I've been unofficially sacked.
  • phone up, ask whoever is in at the time when the manager is in, then go in at that time....job done surely?
The Googlewhacker referance is to Dave Gorman and not to my opinion of the search engine!

If I give you advice it is only a view and always always take professional advice before acting!!!

4 people on the ignore list....Bliss!

I think we can all agree it is not looking too good! Have you been paid at all and was cash in in hand agreed when you started working there? Have you received a contract, pay slip or anything at all from the company to demonstrate your employment?
