I never used to wear one either before it became law.

Despite the horse and carts comment. cars could still do over 100 back "then" and often did as there were no speed cameras.

Cars are much safer these days as well

My father was a paramedic (or an ambulanceman) at the time when seatbelts were not required, finishing work last year.

He has more than enough anacdotal evidence to suggest that seatbelts do indeed save lives!
