OK first entry in Oct list
    Sainsbury - £20.89

Didn't need cheese but checked the per kg price in the passing

Trouble is I like strong cheddar - taste buds getting older - and it is pricey.

Can I ask if there is any reason why some of you don't put the full name of the supermarket you shop in?
There are loads of different cheddars on offer and half price at Lidl atm, and sainsburys I think. Have a quick check online, Lidl's cheese is fab.

    Hello Everyone

I have not joined the grocery challenge for some months due to been all over the place due to redundancy, new baby and DH new job. I have completely lost the plot with my annual challenge so will scrap that and go for £240 for October please. This will also include entertainment, eating out and diesel for my car as I am trying to reduce my spending and if I don't lump it all together into 'housekeeping' I tend to be tempted to fudge the budgets a bit :o Hope this will be ok.

I must start meal planning again and do an up to date list of what is in the cupboards and 2 bulging freezers.

    Thanks

One day in and I'm £49.50 down already, thanks to my organic boxes and £9.50 spent on basically nothing at Mr S (Organix biscuits for baby, random sweet making ingredients as this board has persuaded me to have a go at making Turkish Delight sometime and mini muffin cases. It may get worse as I have two £5 off vouchers for Li£l which expire tomorrow! Yikes. We have a holiday this month as well so it's gong to be extra tight.

Also, I've got into the habit of planning my grocery spend on mysupermarket before leaving the house, does anyone please know if I can do that for Li£l as I can't find it on their website?
Must get organised and rejoin grocery challenge!

    Hi All,

Back from town and the docs. OH will go back to work on Wednesday next week. :T It's a relief as I think we'll both feel things are back to normal and we can start putting August and September well and truly behind us.

I don't know why the sm send vouchers it seems pretty random. The C**p one is probably because we very rarely use the one in town these days, sadly it is very expensive comparatively. But we went there today and used the £2 off voucher bringing the bill down to £21.99.

If it makes anyone feel better ;) I checked the MrM voucher and its £10 off a £60 (not 50) shop so I will have to go some to make an order that size. Perhaps I'll get a few things for the December event to take advantage of the saving but not crash my GC budget.

I'm keeping all treats, choccies, etc for the season on a separate spreadsheet. Only the real food will come out of the GC and we'll probably have a slightly larger budget in December.

I'd also forgotten we had to get the kitten (cats really) food so that was another £12.99. It is the last of the small packs they'd ordered in for us at the local pet shop though so from now on will be getting the 5kg sack for £32 which will save us a great deal. I suppose in reality that means the GC budget for us humans is actually only £208, hadn't thought of it like that before.

OH also visited the deli, the greengrocer and the butcher where a total of the three came to £9.04. So a total of £44.02 spent and it's only the first. Sig is updated.

    Take care all,
    Spigs

    I can imagine :)

Craftyscholar I only eat mature cheddar too, but I never pay full price for it. A year ago it was below a fiver per kg, now it can be as much as £6, 7 or £8 and I refuse to pay that much.

I wait until it's on offer and then I buy several packs, which then means I have enough to last me until it's on offer again.

£idls especially have extremely good cheese offers on almost weekly if you have one near you :)

To be honest, I'm not sure why supermarket names are not written in full, I think it's something to do with advertising, but I could be totally wrong, and probably am :rotfl:

Edited to add Ventured out after all for my bread and milk today, so have to add another £4.46 bringing total so far to £25.40, and I've pretty much only got coffee, noodles, milk and bread to show for it! Had to buy a 1L of Skimmed Milk as Icel@nd didn't have any 2L bottles - they didn't have any yesterday either - 2L would have cost me £1.10 1L cost 86p

Usually I eat only mature cheddar, though sometimes enjoy a bit of smoked cheese or blue cheese. I never pay full price for mature cheddar. Like you, i wait until there is a special offer on and then buy a few packs...or as many as i can afford. Yesterday Morries had (and probably still have) Lake District Mature Cheddar £2 for a 400gram block.

It goes against every fibre of my being to pay full price for cheese. In many ways it has become as expensive and as much as a luxury food as meat or fresh fish, no way am i doing without it though, so this way i get to enjoy it and to afford it.

Many thanks for all the advice re cheese. :)

I think I am on a learning curve about buying on 'special offer' and not saying "oh I don't need that this week". Oh, and learning what will freeze.
