Interesting discussion, Purple Heather. When I started cutting down, my OH was into a beer drinking phase which helped me as I only drink wine and gin and champagne:o

My problem was that when we shared a bottle of wine (or two) at weekends I was always having more than my fair share. Last week we resorted to having his and hers bottles in the fridge. It seemed ridiculous but it helped me measure how much I was drinking which I need to know because of SW.

I would definitely advise trying not to 'waste' an AF night by having a drink really late. I find coming in and putting the kettle on straight away and taking it to bed (that's the tea/coffee, not the kettle:rotfl:)or somewhere works best for me.

    :Tflimsier, that's will power!
  • I have tried two things here, apart from your pointing out that there's none left for tomorrow which would work when he's sober but less effective as the wine gets drunk!

One is investing in a Vacuvin wine saver for under £10 and resealing the wine. Somehow this slows him down a microsecond at the point of pouring the next glass and sometimes that means he goes to bed instead. Plus if there is any left it's nicer to drink the next day.

The other is buying him cans instead of getting wine. He's supportive when I'm trying to cut down and often asks if I'm strong enough if he opens wine not to join him. If he has cider then I'm less tempted.

I should also point out that while I'm out of a job and skint it's not my wine scrimped and saved for but me drinking wine he's bought - I used to earn the same but less for a while now and he picks up a lot of extra stuff for me to share. I'd not be happy at all if it was 'mine' when I can't afford it and he polished it off while i was out or something.

He does sometimes buy cans of lager instead - unfortunately I quite like these too! I can't think of anything alcoholic that he likes that I don't.... Hmmm.... Will give that some thought. I think we might have been given one of those wine saving things you speak of - probably still shrink-wrapped somewhere :o

Oh and I am in a similar position re work - I do work but I don't earn much at all, so it is mainly his money that buys the wine.

I know you're right about that - I feel rubbish in the morning when I drink that late. If I'm not out working, we would normally open a bottle as soon as the kids have settled down at about 8 and then be finished and wanting another bottle by about 9.30-10pm...:o
:D Skint but happy with my lovely family :D

I hope we're all well tonight. Lots of sounding positive which is good

Its day 25 AFD for me tonight. tea eaten, oranges boiling for marmalade making shortly and a hot chocolate for me. Feeling good after managing to get back out for a run and will fit another one in tomorrow or Friday

Not much else to report apart from maman - that was the change I managed ages ago - come home after a couple of drinks, stop and make a cup of tea and then decide not bothered anymore about another glass of wine. It was great to think that too! You sound like you're doing really well too!

Hi All and welcome to purpleheather
20 AF days please Shaggy (incl tonite)
Just home from fat class lost pound and a half, which i know is good but i was hoping for more. Didnt treat myself to my 'usual' on a wed night just came home and ate until i burst!! I went to supermarket on the way home and thought 'stuff it' i will just have a glass of wine tonite, but im kinda scared to as i know that if i have one tonite then i wont stop at a glass of wine i'll have the whole bottle and prob the same again tomorrow night. So to keep safe this month ive just fallen into the pattern of not drinking in the house, only when i go out. I hope to keep this up. I just feel im not at the point of managing to only having 1 glass of wine.

Hi Mackers and well done on the weight loss :T:T (and not having the usual afterwards !!) ;) :rotfl: :T:T:T

I lost 2 pounds tonight- but seeing as I hadn't dared drink anything since about ooh 2 O clock- think most of that was dehydration !! :o
    Well- every little helps !!
Have come home- shattered... and put the kettle on !! So, it's an AF day today please Pen and Shaggy....

    :)
  • Well I did it .... 9 yesterday, 10 tonight! :j Mission accomplished. It was only end-of-month penury in the end, but I'll take it. I shoulda joined Pen's challenge!

In the future though, my weekends will be all over the place as I'm being put on a 'rolling' shift, which means that one week it might be Tuesday & Wednesday. :( Along with that I'm being transferred - along with most of my colleagues - to another depot 20 miles away, and going onto 6 a.m. starts. I've got my induction tomorrow, the alarm's set for 4.25!

Better get to bed I suppose.
  • Well done Mackers and Daisy Chain, I stayed the same this week which was a minor miracle after the weekend.

Another AFD For me tonight so that's 13/16 and Monday and Tuesday of the challenge successfully completed. I hope to get my clapping man jumpy tomorrow - v excited!

Didn't miss booze tonight, which was good.

    Sleep well everyone.
