Vw are now offering to fix problems with your window regulators (common fault) free of charge on cars up to 6 years old.

My n/s electric window failed to go back up after it had been lowered last monday, it was in the dealers on wednesday and they did the both sides.

They started doing it free of charge a little while ago. So they should, its a big fault which occurs in lots of VW's
  • It looks like, but i hadn't been on the Golf forums for a while, so i didn't know myself until it dropped last week, then i went on there, and there were lots of posts about it. They should take reponsability for it, but there are lots of common faults with the MK4,http://uk-mkivs.net/forums/thread/425656.aspx just like my previous A3

Has it happened to you yet?

No mate, im a dealer and have heard of the problem previously.
  • The problem is the window lifting system on the mk4 uses plastic clips which break, I had this problem with my driver side window a few years ago and had to pay as VW would not cover it although I was aware then it was a problem, infact they shafted me so anyone who's car is not covered this may save you some money:-

VW made me buy the complete door kit which trade was I think £140 I knew I only needed the clips but my local dealer told me the clips were not available to buy on their own!!! (lie) I purchased the whole kit which was a metal panel that goes behind the door card and to be honest it was quite a complex and time consuming job removing the old one and replacing it with the new one it involved removing the speaker which I then needed to buy more rivets from VW to put it back etc a good hours work and that's by hubby who is taking car door cards off all day and fitting electrical locking etc, so I hate to think how long it would take someone else with out the right tools to do it.

Anyhow I did some research and found the part number of the broken item, called my VW dealer and they had said part on the shelf!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I wrote a massive complaint and told them I wanted a refund for the part now in my car and I would pay the price for the plastic part, which give them their due they did, althought they wanted to give me a chq which I refused as I had paid cash I wanted cash back, they had no cash in their till so had to borrow from staff to repay me

If I can find the part numbers I will post them for you, as I would hate anyone to get caught like they tried with me

Easier than I thought here you go:-

The part for the upgrade kit (metal clips) is ...

    V1JM 898 461 (NS passenger)
    V1JM 898 462 (OS driver)

The ones above i think are for a 5 door! so if you have a 3 door make sure they will fit!

Glad you managed to sort your problem out. My drivers window suddenly dropped on me and had to scour the vw forums to find a diy run through. This problem is discussed on the USA forums and I had read that US dealers were sorting it free. My local dealer responded that they might but I probably would have to pay.
I set about doing it myself - sussed out it was the plastic bits that were broken. Some superglue and cable tie and a couple of hours scrabbling behind the metal panel and it was sorted. Better than paying the dealer over £200!!

Out of interest - as mine is probably a temporary repair what cost were the replacement clips? I take it that the metal ones replace the white plastic ones?

Thanks for the part nos. anyway.

Out of interest, is this a problem on the Seat Leon Mk 1?

Not sure if they use the same parts for the windows, but are mostly based around the MkIV

  • I have recently encountered a similar problem with my VW Passat Estate 1.9D, where the NS passenger window mechanism has stuck, but the window can be pushed up and down by hand.

My local VW dealer is quoting £300+ for parts and labour.

I'd be interested to hear if any other Passat Owners have had the same problem!.

In reality my local dealership didn't want to know. Rocked up with the door in pieces (after it broke) and it clearly showed it had been replaced 3 years previously, they said 'no'. Car was 98 model

I am not sure what you mean? When did you ask them? cars up to 6 years old are covered, so if you asked them recently, i can understand. My dealer is a pain, i have had loads of trouble with them, but when it came to this, they were ringing me to ask when they could book it in, they even suggested i bring it down that moment, which is unheared of at my dealer, you wait a least a week, sometimes two to book things in. I reckon they get payment from VW U.K for doing any warranty work. If it was a while ago, contact VW U.K direct and ask them to consider it.
