I just prefer the security of the 07017 number. I find the cost of it puts off sales people, foreign call centers and idiots more effectively than anything else.

I think you're kidding yourself there Carl, when these call centres are loading up a data file of x0000's of numbers into their automated diallers, I don't think they single out numbers that they think will push their phone bills up a few pence.

Possibly not watcherman, but since I started dishing that number out to corporations ALL of the overseas sales (the ones TPS is powerless against) people have stopped.

Whether that's because 07017 numbers can't be dialed from abroad or not or whether it's because of the cost, I have no idea, I just know that it works.

I didn't mean to get into a huge debate, I was just posting to say that all 070 numbers are not bad. Yes you will get some users who abuse them, but for others, they provide a very useful service.

I agree with Carl, not all 070 and 090 and the good old 0870 0845 numbers are bad. Some provide a good service.

Problem is that if there is a chance to get some easy money, someone will have a go at it. Nothing anyone can realy go about it because thats the world we live in. If scam artists arent doing this then they will be beating up old ladies for cash.

Had one of these today, one ring, hang up - new number (no trace on Google): 0709 986 8454
Just had a half second 'ping' from 07099895049 on my mobile.

Needless to say, I didn't ring back and, only being able to find THIS on the Ofcom website (and no specific way to complain about CLI dumping), I emailed ruth.gibson@ofcom.org.uk to report it.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
