CLI dumping Scams starting up...
Just received two calls within 15 minutes of each other from 070 numbers using the CLI dumping technique.
OFCOM defines this as: "the practice known as 'CLI dumping', where missed calls from 070 numbers are registered by mobile handsets. Ofcom has continued to receive complaints from consumers about missed calls on mobile handsets. In some instances, it has been alleged that repeated calls are made to the same mobile handset within minutes of each other. If an attempt is made to call the number generating the missed calls, the caller is allegedly held on the line while a recorded message announces that attempts are being made to locate the owner of the number, but the caller is unable to speak to the owner of the number. In other cases, it has been alleged that a recorded message asks the caller to call another number to reach the owner of the number."
The relevant numbers and companies are:
0704 527 3327 provided by Sports Tel Ltd.
0709 680 6423 provided by Xero 9 Limited.
Both are classified as being used for Personal Numbers.
* Don't ring these numbers - they're just attempting to cream off an interconnect charge from your call (50p per minute or greater) and they won't be answered! *

The sad thing is that these firms appear to be getting away with it. Where's Ofcom's teeth?
Consumers shouldn't have to remember that mobile numbers begin 077, 078 and 079.:mad:0 -

Also 075 has been released for use.0 -
Had one of these today, one ring, hang up - new number (no trace on Google):
07099868454
0709 986 8454
0709 9868454
07098 868 454
070 99 868 454Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -
The number providers should specify that such use is outside the terms and conditions. If they won't, then Ofcom and maybe the OFT should jump on them as being accessory to the practice.0

Some of these numbers serve a very valuable purpose.
I personally have an 07017 (35p/min) number which was supplied to me by a web company which I have set-up as my VoIP outgoing number (through VoIP.co.uk, required proof of ownership of the number).
I got this in place primarily because I was getting malicious calls as a result of a BT fault allowing my CLI to go through when it was supposed to be automatically withheld and it has reduced the number of malicious/nuisance calls to 0.
My friends and family have regular mobile/landline numbers to contact me on, everybody else, until I know and trust them, gets the 07017 number, so bear in mind they aren't ALL bad.0 -

I don't understand.
You say that you get unsolicited calls to your landline as a result of your number being broadcast during calls you make.
You then get an 07017 VOIP number, and you give this number out to people who you don't trust.
How does this stop you getting unsolicited calls on your landline? Have you changed your landline number?0 -
Sorry, yes, BT changed my number as a result of their error.
My whole avoiding nuisance calls strategy is:-
1) Only use landline when calling individuals I have given the number to.
2) Using the call management features of my mobile phone to only allow incoming calls from people who I know and who's numbers I have.
3) Using VoIP for all other calls with the 07017 number broadcasting as my pure CLI.
4) Registering every single number with the TPS.
I have been nuisance call free for around 2-3months now and before I started doing the first 3 steps I could count on at least one a week.
Just to clarify, the 07017 number is not a VoIP number. VoIP.co.uk provide geographic numbers, however, they allow you to set your CLI as any number you own/rent as long as you prove to them that you own/rent the number.
They do charge an admin fee for doing that but it's the best fiver I've ever spent phone related.
I have the 07017 number diverted to my mobile then to the VoIP geo number, and it displays the actual 07017 number so I can choose to answer it or cancel it and let my VoIP voicemail deal with it.0 -
surely you could have got a 01/02 geographical code for voip?If I helped or saved you money - Thank me
If I helped you spend some money - spank me
If I done both - :lipsrseal me:eek:0 -
Yeah, they gave me one when I signed up free. I just prefer the security of the 07017 number. I find the cost of it puts off sales people, foreign call centers and idiots more effectively than anything else.0
