I hate Comet so the feeling is mutual! Never buy from Comet or Currys any more, usually John Lewis as customer service is so good.

If you have a product or service complaint you must try to get satisfaction from the retailer first. Your contract of sale is with the retailer, not the manufacturer. Be reasonable and firm, and make sure you know your rights. If you can't get satisfaction from the retailer, the manufacturer may be willing to help, but usually only under limited warranty terms or out of goodwill - don't rely on it.

The Sale of Goods & Services Act (1982) imposes a duty of reasonable care and skill on a service provider, and requires that, regardless of guarantees and warranties, a product must function for a 'reasonable' time - which obviously depends on the product - but generally at least 6 months. Personally, I would expect a washing machine to last at least 2 years.

Check out your rights and how to complain here, especially this and this.

Many companies will change their tune if you quote the SoG&S act and/or mention the small claims court. You can issue a summons online very cheaply, but you must ensure that you have made all reasonable efforts to resolve the problem with the retailer first.

My Ice-lolly fell on the floor then I slipped on it so I'm suing Tesco
  • well i thought it would be only fair to give an update on my situation;

it took comet over a week to come out and replace the split power cable which they had covered in electrical tape.

I have since sent in 2 quotes from flooring companies and have had absolutly no response from comet or their insurance company.

I have sent these in twice now, just in case for whatever reason they didnt get them first time round.

Still no response. I have a floor which has come up and is still in a state of dis-repair, no hint of when they are going to resolve the problem and in its current state is a major hazard, especially with 2 very young children.

I would urger anyone who is buying electrical products for xmas presents or for any reason DO NOT BUY FROM COMET. Their customer services along with the way they treat customers is both despicable and disgusting.
Once they have your money they simply aren't interested.

I can't beleive you were told you must de-scale your element, what a load of tosh. We have had our machine for 8 years and it is just fine with no "descaling" required.

I had the misfortune of working there and I can tell you, customers talk to the people who work there like they are pieces of !!!!. When they didn't get the answer they wanted, they turned it into bad customer services. It wasn't the Hull bit (because all cities are crap) it was the box bit.

You are under 25 ?jeez, whatever happened to customer service and training..
  • Comet are a bunch of tools.

Bought an oven from their website. It arrives and my l'lord sends his electrician round to fit it. Parts of the oven are missing.
Calls to Comet result in them sending the parts. Parts never arrived. Calls again determine they don't think the parts are available. Calls again reveal that actually those parts were never meant to be provided as it is illegal for them to do so.
This took 2 and a half months - the whole time I was cooking with a microwave. (y)

I pop along to another electrical store, buy a cooker (with the so-called "illegal" parts attached) and it's fitted within 30 minutes.
Full refund from Comet and one customer who will NEVER shop there again.
  • Did you try going into a local store and informing a staff member - a tad louder than normal?? I find this usually gets a managers attention and they sort something out esp if it is damaging the companies reputation.

I have been a victim of their poor customer service as well... with a washing machine and did this and got a new washing machine with a generous goodwill gesture and free delivery!!

I also agree with others on here - NEVER SHOP AT COMET OR CURRIES!!! Always shop local as they usually pride themselves on good customer service.
  • Had an arguement with comet after they wouldn't replace the washer/dryer that broke down four times with three different faults in the first two months.
Gave up and for the last year have only been using the washer.
Still, I believe I've lost comet about 5k in sales due to my experience. And whilst my belief might not be true, as most beliefs it gives me a feeling of smug satisfaction, which is always nice to offset my damp clothing.
