Is this your machine? Can't find it elsewhere.
  • I was in the same boat as the OP a few weeks back, I went for this with cashback and a discount code, BNPL sept 2011. Came in around £330 all in,

I cant fault it, I find it just as fast as my desktop and have met no draw backs so far. I use it for web browsing, watching films, composing word documents and playing the pre-installed games.

Price wise it was a little cheaper than I could find it anywhere else, so im not paying over the odds for the benefit of BNPL

    hth op,

replace avg with avast, uninstall the aol demo, and disable those google updaters/crashhandlers and toolbar(unless you use it) using hijackthis.

post more info on what's happening with processes when the fan is kicking in.

  • Donnie - yep, that's the one :)

  • Right - fan really kicking in now.

    Commit Charge Total = 348664
    Commit Peak = 597524

AC adaptor plugged in, battery still in and I only have web on. AVG gone, Avast installed plus other bits mentioned if I've done it correctly. Still need to get SP3 but need to get disk to do it as it keeps coming up with error msg and telling me to insert disk.

is the website processor intensive. I'M SORRY BUT I DON'T KNOW WHAT THIS MEANS. I AM ONLY ON MSE AND A BABY FORUM SO AS FAR AS I AM AWARE NOT MANY PROCESSORS BEING USED. HOPE I HAVE RIGHT END OF STICK.

try it without the battery. I WOULDN'T EVEN KNOW WHERE TO START WITH REMOVING IT.

is the vent covered. NO AS IT IS AT THE BACK SO OPEN.

what is the error message. I GET A MESSAGE WHICH SAYS "THE FEATURE I AM TRYING TO USE IS ON A CD-ROM OR OTHER REMOVABLE DISK THAT IS NOT AVAILABLE. INSERT THE MICROSOFT XP PROFESSIONAL WITH FRONT PAGE DISK AND CLICK OK."

Sorry for caps, hope my info helps.

    cpu

processor intensive means graphics, video, games, or just badly written websites with links all over the place.

it pulls out, sometimes has a locking latch.

is it on a flat surface, some also have vents underneath

when do you get that message, have you got the disc?

    SVCHOST.EXE going between 80-99

ah ok, no, not process heavy then.

yep, pretty flat. Well, ok my lap but as flat as can be without a tray.

The disk is upstairs at the mo and in awkward place so will have to get it tomorrow. I thought updates were just that, updates to the orginal so no disk required as it had already been installed.

Thanks so much for all your help.

If it's prompting for the disk, a file, log, or registry entry has probably gone awol at some point, so it needs the disc to fix it. disk cleaners can sometimes cause this problem.

run this, if svchost is the culprit, you need to dig a little deeper to find which dll it is.

    http://live.sysinternals.com/procexp.exe

find the svchost which is throttling the cpu, then click on it, and click on image, and post the command line
