Scared to walk our two dogs

We, and a few of our neighbours, are very reluctant to walk our dogs at the moment. In the last two weeks there have been a spate of attacks, where a Staffordshire Bull Terrier has attacked both the dogs, and their owners.
THIS is the latest attack, and happened just up the road from where we live.
This man was knocked to the floor by a Staffy who was ordered to 'Kill' by its owner, after it had already attacked an old man walking his small dog. All three suffered horrendous injuries.
Two other attacks just over a week ago, were literally streets away from our house, and there was at least another one attack before those... what is the world coming to??? We are now scared to walk our dogs, for fear of what will happen to them and to us should we come across the culprit/s of these incidents

tragic - sure, occasionally dogs will fight and that's just one of those things... but the claim that this dog had been trained to attack on command is really sad - I suppose its always happened, but it seems to be a growing trend - and there are lots of people online offering to train 'personal protection' dogs... its part of a bigger social problem I think.0

Thanks for posting this empty, my Daughter lives in Derby so I have passed it on to her. Her little un wouldnt stand a chance if something got hold of him.
Its so sad that the poor dog has been trained ot do this. Of course we know it isnt the dogs fault, but when the owner is caught the poor dog will have to be put down.
Nothing to really stop the owner getting another dog is there. (Now I will be slaughtered) Put the bloody owner down. Or at least send the $*&)£* to prison with a sentence that says you will be punished, not a slap on the hand.
empty please be careful wont you, if you do take your fur babies out then take a stick with you. Another good tip is carry a pot of pepper in your pocket. If needed it will give you a chance to get away.

I would like to think that with the publicity the culprit will be found.
The problem is, the dog will be destroyed. It's not the dog's fault because it's only trying to please its owner. Another dolt giving Staffies a bad name.
A terrible state of affairs. I would like to think that if the owner was caught he got charged with attempted murder - I can't see any justification for anything else. This is one of those instances where a long jail sentence can be the only satisfying outcome.0 -
It is a pity- the dog is being trained completely wrong- there are very few situations now (outside of a working capacity) where you could justify a house dog being trained to kill.
I have heard occasionally of a few cases where the dog had been retrained following a kill command owner- but the truth is, it's cheaper to put them down.0 -
It just seems to have been one attack after another for the past three weeks or so. All close by too. We haven't walked our dogs properly since this last one happened, because we're too scared to. How wrong is that? And like you've all said, the tragic thing is, if the owner is found, then the poor dog will be destroyed. It is never the dog's fault. But I can't see them catching this guy... if he is behind all of the attacks (which I don't think he is) then he's doing well at laying low.
Sorry to sound thick Chris, but what would I be carrying a pot of pepper in my pocket for..? To chuck over the dog I presume?"Your life is what your thoughts make it"

Do you have a car? If so, you really should be using it to take the dog elsewhere. There's no excuse for not walking dogs.0 -
Pepper- yes, it'll irritate their eyes, without causing any long-term problems- handy if you do get one attacking. Or the owners.0

Yeah, we have a car. We will be taking them further away for walks at the weekend. We are walking them. Just not half as far or as long as we'd like to, because all routes lead to a place where someone's been attacked, if you see what I mean.
I didn't say we were not walking them, just that we are reluctant to, out of fear at the moment."Your life is what your thoughts make it"

Sorry to say this proc but, if we had the same here then I wouldnt walk my dog until the threat was over. No good walking into trouble now is there.
He would get his walk around the garden.

Never thick empty. Anyway the pepper can be used to give you time to get away. Just throw into the face of dog/humans and then just leg it.
Years ago I worked at a place that was down a very quiet lane, in the winter is was dark and lonely. Mum gave me a pot of ground white pepper to keep in my pocket, I never went without it. Glad to say I never had to use it.
It is legal as well.
