SEO is, and always has been very suspect indeed.
I don't have all the answers as I don't work in it. But I presume if you think it's so easy you'll have a site that's @ number 1 in the rankings then?
There's no doubt that anyone with the mind to learn can do it themselves, or that there are a lot of chancers making money by pretending to do SEO and just spending the money down the pub. You dismissing it all as bunkum makes me do the same to your comments.Set your goals high, and don't stop till you get there.

I don't really know what SEO is. I paid for a website some years ok which was informative and looked quite nice, but I don't think it did very well on Google. I hardly checked because I don't understand it all.
For me, like any other self-employed tradesmen, I just want the chance to quote for jobs, because I reckon I'm competitve. Local Link gave me a free webpage and I pay £20 odd quid a month depending on the rankings I get on Google. I get a few calls/e-mails from it, and it's got me some local work. I've recommended it to 2 mates, a decorator and a blind fitter. One of them likes it, the other hasn't had any calls but has ony paid £15 in 3 months. Guess you can't please everyone0 -
You can do the following SEO on your website:
- utilise keywords that are most likely to be used to find your site
- check your keywords are also contained within the main text of your site to fully optimise your keywords
- ensure you site is quick to download (helps if you code to W3C standards and to not use too many graphics)
- the content of the site is regularly updated
- ensure your site contains something of use to someone and is easy to navigate so that it attracts and holds the attention of actual people
Then combine the above with effective online marketing
- using a blog
- using social networks such as Twitter and Facebook
Finally, check for problems and check how well your keywords are doing using
- Google Webmaster
If you did all of the above, you will be fully optimising your site and it will not cost a penny. Getting on the first page in a popular niche will of course, take more time but that is all it is. Time.
You can also maximise your profile online by using AdWords. If you wanted to get your site up and running quick, I would even suggest to start using AdWords whilst your site is still being indexed with the main search engines. Then, as your site starts to climb up the organic search results, ease off with the AdWords (unless this works very well for you, of course!).0
