I pay 20 odd quid a month to be on Google and have been gettin a couple of requests a month for quotes and stuff. I were peed off when I got the cold call cos I get em all the time, but I have to admit they were polite and friendly and not so pushy.
I've had 3 jobs from it up to now and made me a few quid.....all in and around Dewsbury where I live
When will people learn that these SEO companies don't actually do anything. They say they will get you at the top of the search engines but this happens anyway after a few weeks!
They literally don't do anything as there is nothing they can do, they can't provide anything to you that you can't do yourself, they're not magicians!
You're paying them £20 per month and they are doing physically nothing. I would cancel that membership immediately :eek:0 -

All kinds of wrong. A good SEO company does a lot and will get you a decent 1st page position. There are of course lots of bad companies who will attempt to trouser cash. The difference in enquiries between the top position and the 4th listing is huge.Set your goals high, and don't stop till you get there.

I'd forgotten about this thread that I started...
I must admit that I think that many SEO people are simply trying to find ways to get around the search engines' optimisation algorithms and, as soon as too many people use a particular technique, the search engines are going to start ignoring sites that use that technique. In years gone by, plenty of meta tags would have ensured a high search ranking but nowadays these can be a disadvantage if you have too many.
A good web designer who understands the basic principles of good web design and an informative, useful website are the key to getting your site high on the search rankings.

You mean they set up a google adwords account and pretend they've done magic :T
Anyone can do that themselves, they're just praying on people who know no better. If someone is serious about getting good positions then research on google will tell them what to do step by step. Always say no to SEO0 -
I used to get a lot of these calls at work, and they were almost without fail quite rude when I said I wasn't interested, aggressive about the fact that we would never get anywhere without them and remarkably ill-informed about the nature of SEO. I can only assume that if they do employ anyone who does know about optimising either a website or an Adwords account, they don't train their salespeople with any of this knowledge. Realistically, if you want a company that are really good at SEO, they should come up first in the organic rankings when you search for them - if they can't get their own site first for a good, relevant generic search term, then they won't get yours there either!0

I disagree with that. There is a big difference between adwords and effective SEO. I speak as someone who works for a company which operates a number of websites and also as someone who has learned the hard way that whilst there are some companies out there that genuinely do a good job - for every 1 that does there are probably 100 who are completely useless and another 1,000 which are nothing more than complete shysters.
Optimising your website by following Google's guidelines is not sufficient. That will get you so far, but especially where there is a lot of competition for search terms, that will not be sufficient to get search results on page 1 of Google. And before you ask - no we don't sell SEO. We do however contract it out to a company that has demonstrated very good results where several others have completely failed.0 -
why would you suddenly decide to google them if you are happy with their service and been using them since Jan????
isn't that what you would do?
next you will say you should Google before you use a service.:rotfl:
Unless of course you are an employee of said company.....
Yet another first poster singing the praises of a company getting a slapping.....:T0 -

Ok, so what are you pearls on SEO? I am yet to hear an answer from anyone to what exactly SEO companies actually do as if it is a big secret and you guys have all the answers.
SEO is, and always has been very suspect indeed.0 -
I worked for one of these companies for a month who charged on pay per click. It was our job to think up combinations of words that someone might put into Google. We then had to decide how much to pay for that combination and how much you pay depends on where your company comes in a Google sponsored search. You can do this yourself with Google Adwords if you want. You might however end up paying a lot in SEM if you want the most popular search terms.
SEO is a more tricky task.
However, I would try and do it yourself to begin with if your business is quite unique in your area. Google bots will help you in the end0 -

The honest answer is I don't fully understand how they do it. But whatever it is it works. I understand the basics - making sure your site is coded & formatted correctly, all the tags are right, that the content is regularly updated etc. But there is a second level to SEO that I/we don't understand.
I know a company that does know - the have given us results that speak for themselves, but exactly how they achieve the results I don't know. If we did, I'm pretty sure we would be doing it ourselves, but we don't and so we continue to outsource it.0
