Wing mirrors are designed to bend back on themselves towards the side window if you hit them but not too hard.

Wing mirrors are now designed to pop out away from the side window & can easily be popped back in. This saves them being broken off.

  • I was expecting it to be like "Forum Beirut" in here with the usual perfect suspects ripping the OP to pieces and missing the concept of an accident and accusing her of doing it on purpose etc...

    So far so good:D....

Unlucky !!!! happens be wise on your guard incase they try to rip you and if in doubt throw it at the insurance and let them deal with it....
  • I would also report the incident to the police. I know that that might sound excessive but I had a similar incident last year where I bumped mirrors with an oncoming car and after "discussions" (them screaming and swearing at me and waving the broken bit of my wing mirror casing in my face) they drove off. I spoke to someone when I got home and was told that as it was an accident, no matter how minor you had to report it to the police. I phoned the police station to check and they told me to go down and report it to them.

It could be that you are a a bit more protected from any fraudulent claims then as you have given a statement of the incident to the police.

^^ I went to the Police after a suspected injury claim scam, they didn't want to know.

Agree the police aren't interested at all and most insurance companies would rather pay out a bit of compensation than have to try and prove otherwise.

  • What I meant was that the actual incident should probably be reported to the police, not wait till they've submitted a fraudulent claim and then report them for that.

Agreed. A couple of years ago I drove my mum's car to Tesco with my friend in the passenger seat. There was no car in the space next to the passenger side when we got out. When we came out of the shop there was a very abusive woman who jumped out her car and started telling us we'd hit her. Once I stopped laughing and realised she was for real she showed us a big dent and red paint on her drivers door. She then grabbed my passenger door and started streching it to show that if the wind blowed it could have caught her door and my car was a 'very distinctive red' colour (it's not and it's a very popular car). She asked for my details and I had to give them to her because she said she would call the police for failing to provide details. I also asked for hers, explaining I wanted to let my insurance know we were contesting it, and she gave them reluctantly. We whizzed the car round to the local garage who verified that our door had not lost any paint and had never scraped anything- they were happy to share this with the insurance company if need be. We rang our insurers and told her that we would object to her claim. Two weeks later we got a letter saying they'd paid out. When my mum rang to complain they apologised and said it was cheaper than contesting and they changed it to a no fault claim.

Please be aware that if your with the supercheapo insurance companies (Admiral et al) and there is a claim put in, they'll probably pay out and screw your future NCB. Its cheaper in the long term for them and they wouldn't know customer care if it slapped them in the face.
  • thank you all for your kind help and advice :)
update - I decided to call my insurance and let them know what happened, i did not admit that the accident was my fault, just told them what happened etc. Really annoyed at myself for not taking any photos - lesson learnt though, i will be buying a cheap disposable camera this afternoon! I'm quite a nervous person, who worries about everything and waiting for this phonecall is doing my head in! Will let you all know if anything else develops. Thanks again!
