Hit a car..

Hi, this evening whilst driving to work I hit a drivers wing mirror. I didn't notice at the time (turning was very tight, and has music on :o), they then followed me and when i parked I had the most abusive women shout at me for not stopping after hitting their car. I apologised and told the couple that I honestly didn't realise. They had no damage whatsoever to their car, however the guy was rubbing his wingmirror and left wheelarch? I hit his driver side, from my passenger wing mirror.
Anyway, their car is a company car so again I got the lady mouthing off stating that they would have to pay if the car wasn't in perfect condition when they returned it to the company. I offered to pay for any damage as would rather not go through insurance and loose NCB. The driver agreed that insurance is messy, and the women said that they would have to speak to the company first and "if they want the whole side resprayed then that's what will happen". I was very shook up after this, and gave her my name, telephone number and who i was insured with, I assume she's got my registration number.
Just wondering where to go next from all this? Is it really likely that a wingmirror can damage the wheelarch? I have a witness who saw that the car had no damage to it, but stupidly didn't take any pictures! Is it worth me ringing the insurance? I don't want to loose my 2 years NCB, especialy as i need to renew my insurance next month :( any advice?

Then it's highly unlikely you caused significant damage that would necessitate respraying an entire side. Was there any damage on the side of the car they were looking at (the one opposite to the one you knocked)? Just sounds awfully like they know they have damaged the car themselves and are now trying to pin it on you.
  • Sounds like a pull-on - you should have just denied it , did you notice any damage to their wing mirror? Sounds like it just needed popping back into place

no damage, the car was in good condition. If i hit their wing mirror it surely wouldn't of damaged the wheel arch? She just kept on throwing in 'but babe it's not your car it's the companys!' I'm glad I've got someone else to prove that there was no damage, Just really worried incase it goes to insurance :(
  • How can you not notice when you hit someone else ?

If you hit me and didn't stop, I'd have them throw the book at you.

You could have hit a child, a pedestrian, anything. You obviously cannot drive properly and seem to think it funny to blame it on music. You should be banned.

OP did you knock their wing mirror off or just bump into it? The wing mirror obviously sticks out a good few inches more than the wheel arch so I can't see how they can blame you for any damage to that.

A wing mirror is hardly the same as a person. Perhaps you should be banned for failing to banned from driving for failing to realise this important difference.

  • I wouldn't be surprised if they were "injured" too. It's something I see all the time. Hopefully, if they do decide to press on and try and claim for damage to their wing/wheel arch, your insurers will get someone to look at both cars, and it will be obvious you didn't cause the damage.

    Hi Kay,

This has all the makings of a possible scam claim by the people whose car you, allegedly, hit. As a precaution I'd take several photo's of your car including front back and side, inc. close ups of the wing mirror that, supposedly, clipped their car, to show there wasn't any damage caused to yours. I would have thought there would at least be a graze to your mirror if it did hit/clip their car. It could be that they have tried this on before. ASAP get your witness to confirm in writing what happened and that there wasn't any damage to the other car. Ask them to sign and date it, just in case.

Also if you are sure that there wasn't any damage to their cars bodywork then don't agree to pay for repairs to the and see what they do.

I have a work colleague that had someone drive into his car while he was stopped at lights and then tried to claim that he was at fault. Caused a lot of hastle to disprove what they were saying as he didn't have a witness.
